This is probably a simple answer, but it's eluded me.

What flashes are PJ's using that flash so quickly for them? I'm pretty sure they're using the same thing some of us our using for stuff, so why can't I get mine to do that?

An external battery pack (worn on a belt around the waist) gets MUCH faster recovery time from normal flash units.

Photojournalists are also often not flashing at full power. They are generally adding only a minimal amount of fill, so their flash will recycle faster for that reason as well. The external battery pack, as mentioned, is also probably in play.

What he said. External battery packs like the Quantum also allow for faster recycle times.
