i too was surprised by the intense popularity of the baseball and sports imagery (there was also arnit's golf shot that placed very high), such that you're, imo, tastefully done card game picture didn't do as well.
guess that proves the old adage that nothing gets between a guy and his "game" ... <shakes head> ... :) ...

Only because we have a lot of women on this site and baseball fanatics..:-)
For some reason nudes or semi nudes are treated rather harshly on this site. So many folks here carry so many biases and hate for different reasons.
I see a lot of young people hating more than older folks too. Odd since they are supposed to be free thinkers.

funny how free thought could be used in a stereotype. and also how it should apply to both photography and, say, politics - because as we all know, they are equally important.
based on that, one could say that parents of this age are living in a fantasy that their technological whiz kids are going to save the world for them, with their fancy new 'free thought'. that doesnt sound much more like another stereotype, though, does it? strange though, i see all sorts of 20 somethings of all walks of life, but if im not mistaken, the weather certainly has been a bit queer the past couple years in certain areas of the world.
also, i dont see how free thought directly rules out hatefulness in a person. we are free to think hateful things. we are free to voice them. and i dont think that things are intended hateful as often as they are percieved as such. in fact, ive found that people are very touchy. its almost as if deceny has become some kind of religion - a very exclusive and posh one.
the fact remains that you can only postulate about what this free thought and enlightenment is until you've reached it. and if you have, no one who hasnt will ever believe you when you tell them about it. and you should know that, so you wouldnt speak of it, in all your mighty enlightened forethought.
hence, stfu. |

Well, I see a lot of ignorance from all age groups.
My wife can't understand when she reads some of the stuff here that there is so little tolerance at an art site. Most of my friends she knows that are kind of artsy are very tempermental but tolerant..going out of their way to experience variety of life.
Well, at least you can see the commentator and judge their work against your own and decide if they have any real contribution to make or are just angst ridden :-) |

Kimbly I thought your strip poker photo was well done and inoffensive. Now for the fully clothed cops and robbers photo, I wasn't so impressed. What I'm saying here is that if done tastefully, I would rather see a nude or semi-nude photo over a blatantly provacative one with clothes. Please, before anyone attacks me for saying this, remember I am only stating my opinion and I have a right to do so. |

that is a completely logical opinion. it could be used rather effectively as a personal rule for photography, as well.
it does not affect the fact that some of us think every single challenge has the same old shit in it, and that of that group of people, not all of them enjoy looking at aforementioned shit every week.

i dont completely agree. i think there a lot of people who are still learning to walk before they run. some people will never break out. and you also have to admit that every challenge, there are at least a few creative surprises. maybe what you''re complaining about underneath it all is that there aren''t as many geniuses (maybe even demented geniuses) in the world as you would like? in that case, take a number .. ; )

I don't think anyone claims "mighty enlightened forethought" or other such drivel.
"free thinkers" was just a reference to people who may not agree or understand another viewpoint but that doesn't threaten them in a way that makes them hostile.
Blah, blah..etc, etc, yada , yada..
I don't know if I am a free thinker or what but I can read your stuff without having to tell you to STFU.

i already took my picture.. it's as creative as i can get with about an hour of running around my house taking pictures of shit, but im pretty cool with the idea. and im too lazy/busy to change it, usually.
its also not hard to find, actually, if one were so inclined. |

i guess i would like to see everyone think of something different. i like it when a photo makes me laugh, cringe, giggle, vomit.. all of the above. at the same time. whatever.
so long as i dont just stare at it with a sad look trying to comprehend where this person's parents went wrong (ooooooohsnap !).
and now its time to go kick lang's ass at cstrike. |

it's good to have high expectations in life, assuming you can handle the inevitable disappointments. i think what makes some of us more effective than others though in effecting change is diplomacy and tact. i used to be more similar to how you seem to be: harshly blunt - until I realized that I was just making things more of an uphill battle than they needed to be. When I couched my suggestions and opinions in terms that didn't come across as an attack or a personal affront, without being a doormat, I found that my influence to make the world a place I'd more like to be grew. of course, some people do thrive on anger and angry exchanges - I guess this goes back to your comment about "where a person's parents went wrong." Maybe those people are beyond the reach of rational disourse, or havent yet realized the value of a smooth ride vs. a bumpy one. I guess it comes down to choosing one's battles wisely, because when one has a very busy life, one doesn't have the energy to fight with everyone. anywho ...

Not exactly an outtake, but I wanted to thank everyone for the comments on my photo. It was one of those "it's not perfect, but it's Sunday afternoon and I really want to enter a shot" kind of photos. In fact, even though it was too dark and not quite sharp, I liked it.
I did read up on working with photos in PhotoImpact after this, and found out just what I needed to do to sharpen and lighten the picture a little (of course, by then it was too late for the competition). Since I wasn't doing that one for the competition, I also included more of the left hand side and just cloned out some of the background which made me crop the way I did for the competition.
Last but not least, Mattias is still blending into the background, but I have to admit that I kind of liked that anyway.

I enjoy seeing comments like yours... when someone applies something new they have learned, overall improvements start coming in much quicker... :)
