I most have time at night to shoot. Do you have any advise for night crawlers such as myself? |

First, get a good tripod - nice and solid, but as easy as possible to set up and not too heavy. Remember, you have to carry it. I usually set my camera for aperture priority or manual, and count on exposures of up to several seconds, so avoid moving targets. Your camera, I'm told, is one of the best for night shots as it has an infra-red focusing aid and (this I'm not sure of) infra-red shooting mode. Noise can be a problem with long exposures, and it may pay to increase your film speed - though this also contributes to noise. Do a lot of experimenting. |

Always use manual focus. And always underexpose by 0.5-2 stops. Your EV metering will try to compensate for lots of black and turn it grey.
With night I shoot exclusivly manual.

If you're using long exposures, make sure to use either a trigger release button, or the timer. Makes all the difference.
Experiment with long exposures. If you add some moving subjects as well as static ones, you might be pleasantly surprised by the results.
I do nights shots whenever I have the chance, and love the looks I get from people passing by. Last one was in a snowstorm at 1:00 AM. People thought I was crazy! LOL!

Take LOTS AND LOTS of shots and make (at least mental) notes of how you took them! Don't give up if a first few (or so) look like crap!
Does your camera bracket? I think that it does... That's one thing I'm looking for in next camera!

almost all the night shots I have done with my 707 were at iso 100 or 200, the noise reduction on the 7x7 is great. I have been pleased with night shots ranging from 2 to 10 seconds on the sony. I have done longer but I usually keep them under 15 seconds.
here are some examples....

Try to take them with a little ambient light such as dusk. In my experience a little under exposure can help reduce glare and deepen the dark areas. Here are some of mine:
Nice work by the way James. |

you shouldnt have a problem with focusing because of night framing and nightshot. These are two very good features. Also you have Holograph AF which works great in the dark. You shouldnt have too much noise at ISO 100.Just make sure you have a tripod. |

If your really interested in night time photography, pick up the lastest version of Photography Monthly. It's by far the best of the photography magzines that I've seen. It's british, so it costs like $10 CAN, but it's worth it. This month they have a good guide on night time photography! Pick it up!

I saw a night shot recently that I cannot locate. The camera was pointed directly up at the sky, and I believe the exposure was 30 minutes. It was an awesome picture of the stars. Should anyone remember seeing the image I would love a link to be able to see it again. |

No but that's a great picture too! The one I was refering to had a long enough exposure to catch some fair amount of movement of the stars in the sky. I'm hoping I saw the picture here, but honestly I have looked at so many books over the last couple of weeks that it is possible I saw it in print.
Thanks for your time, and the response. |
