| I like the 5D with the full frame sensor...that would almost be the seller for me. |

Depends on which mk2 you're talking about. The 1Dmk2 has an 8.2mp sensor with a 1.3x(?) crop, but shoots 8fps. I'm thinking that you probably don't want or need that kind of speed. The 1Dsmk2 has a full frame 16.6mp sensor so it will have the same size, but higher resolution than the 5D and also be about double (if not more than) the cost. If it were up to me, I'd get the 5D and spend the rest on some lenses but I don't have that kind of money anyway. :)
Edit to add: Yeah, way more than double the cost. I guess it depends on how much 4 extra megapixels are worth to you.

5D would definately be my choice too... :)
Unless of course you are into action photography - then I would go for the MkII |

The real difference in image quality between the 1Ds MkII and 5D is less than you might think. I can't find the old link right now, but someone over at DPReview did a nice test and the 5D came in *very* close to the 1-series in total detail.
If you don't need the weather-sealed body and the 45-point AF, the 5D is probably the choice. OTOH, if $$$$ are really no object, then wait a couple or three months and see whether a replacement for the 1Ds MkII gets announced. |

I use both cameras ( Canon EOS-5D ....12.8mp and the Canon EOS-1DS Mark II ....16.7mp ) BUT I will probably be buying a second 5D this year as a preferred backup. That should answer your question. LOL!!

It all depends on what you want to shoot. You are talking about 2 cameras at different ends of the spectrum.
If you are a landscape photog then 5D is without doubt the best choice, but take a 5D to a sports event or go wildlife shooting then you will wish you had the MkII.
There really isn't a choice its black and white, 5d for landscape MkII for sports/wildlife. |

| Isn't the Mk3 the replacement for the Mk2? |

I think you may be right in the fact that some of us may be talking different models without realising it.
Canon EOS-5D ....12.8mp
Canon EOS-1D ....4.06mp
Canon EOS-1D Mark II ....8.2mp
Canon EOS-1D Mark III ....10.1mp
Canon EOS-1D Mark IIN ....8.2mp
Canon EOS-1DS ....11.1mp
Canon EOS-1DS Mark II ....16.7mp

Another thing to consider is file size -especially with the 1Ds Mark III- which will effect processing speed, archiving and backup capacities. You'll need a fast computer with plenty of RAM and, likely, more and bigger external drives (archiving). A FW card reader and fast CF/SD cards are also a good idea.
A mediocre lens will make a poor lens when coupled with a 1Ds Mark II and may therefore become obsolete. Slight or subtle faults or shortcomings will appear crass via 16.7mp.
