Does anyone here use compact fluorescent bulbs as modeling lights in their monolights? I know the bulbs can't be dimmed like regular tungstens can, but if I use the modeling light at full power all the time, it should be fine to use, right? For the record, my strobe is a White Lightning Ultra 1800.

I tried one in a modeling light and hated the result. It throws color balance to hell. Best grab a normal 65 watt "daylight balanced" or "natural light" bulb

But whats the difference if the color balance is just off for the modeling light? It didn't effect the actual exposure, did it?

I set custom white balance with modeling lights on - having one CFL in the room made that hard to calibrate right.

Cindi, do you turn your modeling lights off after setting up, or do you leave them on?

I leave them on. ABs automatically turn off the modeling light for the moment of flash, then they're on again.

PS - ordered my 4th AB strobe today! PINK PINK PINK :)

Why would you set white balance when using strobes? Especially to a light source other than the strobes?

You're right, the strobes do flash when I set CWB - sorry, I'm doing about 5 things at once over here & just wasn't thinking when I answered.
