Find some toys to engage her and take her pictures playing with them. They don't have to be complex or involved, and you could even ask her mom to bring a couple of her (the kid, not the mom) favorite toys and use them.

For almost all of my kids "little" pictures like that, they have their "comfort" thing with them (Huggy Pup for my son, Bear Blankie for my little girl). It gives them a sense of comfort, and when they outgrow the toy, there is still something to remember them by. :)

I don't formally shoot kids in that age range because it is difficult, but when I was working with my son to get decent shots at that age, I mainly just put him in his environment, decluttered as much as possible and followed him around and adjusted my composition based on what he was doing... It'll be impossible to get them to "pose" for you at that age.

so even photos taken of her kind of just playing are still cute?

Yes....

and no...

It also depends on what you do in post-processing!

Step out of the box and don't try to "force" a shot... you'll be surprised what you can end up with.

Yes, I try to get sedated before every child shoot.

I have two specific suggestions:

1) get a large piece of shiny, crinkly wrapping paper - the metallic foil type. It tends to amuse them for quite a while, and you might get some cute poses out of it, and maybe even some good looking reflections from it.

2) get a large box and make it into a "house". Depending on the amount of effort you feel like putting into decorating it (paints, fabric, etc), you'll get some shots with a perfect natural frame (the window or door) as he/she looks out from the box. If you have the space to store the box, it could become a part of your props for future reference.

She's not 15 months, but not much older...

This guy was about 15 months:
These were both shot outside with sheets as backdrops under a overcast sky.

These were a bit younger:

Kids like balloons and bubbles at this age. Selective coloring with the balloons is really a lot of fun. Some like to play dress up, so adult shoes or boots are fun, big hats, fairies, flowers, butterflies, ballerinas. Of course, the girls I know have older siblings that engage them in this type of play.

I take a lot of pic's of baby's, kids, toddlers & first of all, take the word "pose" out of your vocabulary.. :-).. It's all just candids done in the best lighting you can get them in using a fast shutter speed.. They move so fast you'll have a bunch of blurrys.. So, be sure to take a ton of images and count on your post processing to make them really magical..

On the one with the hat, I shot that in the front yard and he wasn't even looking at me, but it's one of my favorites.. The others are in the studio, but I held a rattle in my other hand & that's really what he's looking at.. I only caught a few of him looking at me and that was just luck.. The one with the funny face I caught because he was about to sneeze..

You'll do great.. Just take a ton and you'll find some gems in there no matter what.. :-)

My little boy was about 15 or 18 mos old with these. I took him to a field at the community college where I work, gave him his toy lawn mower and just followed him around snapping.

In the first one, he is sitting on a fence at Chimney Rock park, and I cropped out his grandfather who was making sure he didn't fall off.

You better have some plan. You have about 5 minutes. After that, they stop cooperating.

Give them something to play with and start shooting. Also, take them outside in the shade.

double sided sticky tape...

(apparently that is what the photographer who took my shot in my christening gown used to put my hands together - although that was 22 years ago and child abuse was an alien concept - scarred for life i am ;))

Although 15 months is a bit old for that ploy i would assume.
