You can have a minimalist image without negative space - for example a single flower petal filling the frame. However you can also have a minimalist image with negative space - flower petal in the center of an empty frame. AND you can have negative space in an image that is not minimalist -- very busy image with unused space around the subject. Minimalism is a style - negative space is more of a descriptive describing how the empty areas are used. Clear as mud? :)

Think of a negative space photo as having large areas of nothing balancing with a small area of something! Minimalism is about removing clutter and business from the photo.

mmmm not quite as clear as mud, maybe more like clear as...concrete? or something? oh man i am just not funny... :) would this be considered negative space if its got stuff in it still then? It seems a bit busy but she only takes up a small part of the framme...or is this minimalism or is it just neither?

Definitely both! But you probably wouldn't want that negative space to get any busier.

Pardon my ignorance. I love this picture, but is it really negative space?

Would a person standing in one side of a field of flowers work too?

I'd say YES to the window, a little bit less of a YES to flowers (really depends on how it's done I guess)

Yep, you can still enter the free study. Every week there's 2 'exclusive open' challenges, and you can only enter one of those two, but you can enter the members' challenges whenever you feel like it.

I guess my vision of negative space is either more strict or not photography based. I thought negative space was more like wiki's definition:
Wikipedia Negative Space

In my opinion, the window shown above (placed 10th in Negative Space II) is an excellent use of negative space. It's an image where the negative space is clearly defined and adds to the photo. Negative space should be like bokeh - it should add to the photo. Many, many images in the previous negative space challenges just stretched the canvas to add blank backgrounds. IMO, that's not true negative space - but I guess this is DPC and you can't argue with the voters.

I'd like to point out, not that it'll help much :), that "using the negative space to create the wow of the photo" does NOT mean the same thing as "have a lot of negative space there". Of course a lot of negative space is great, just if there's only a little bit, it doesn't have to be DNMC.

I went and looked through some of these. I am confused are these negative space images? They are not what I would define that way, yet they did pretty well in voting. I want to make sure I am not entering another 4.1 here.

All fine images with excellent composition to be sure, but not lots of "negative" space.

I am so damn proud of my entry for this challenge......but every time I think that, I end up an average 5. I took a risk in shooting it.....LOL :)

I just uploaded mine. I feel it is perfect for this challenge and rates a 7+ . It will likely score sub 5.5 !

Would something like this work for Negative Space, or are the clouds to prominent or discernable to work for a Negative Space challenge??

I would call this a "negative space" image, but it wouldn't do so well in the challenge - lacks of interest and/or beauty...

I agree as for the interest level of the image. I have an image now uploaded but I'm just afraid the "negative space" is a little too identifiable and might get DNMC'ed to death. But I think it is a better image than my safe "image". However, if most think these clouds are ok, then I think the background in my other image will be ok.

I agree with you, I don't see much negative space commanding my interest in the photo. All I see in these pictures are backgrounds.

I'd say it is more minimalism than negative space. Looking at the Wiki definition and my understanding of it from before. Since there are elements distracting from the shape of the girl, such as the rocks and the plants.

True, I'll second that.

Let's see, nobody but CVette understands what negative space is... (based on the description even Langdon doesn't know)... and my image is actually an example of negative space...

therefore, I will get a low score...

the way i did it was i used the negative space to make the photo awesome, if it was just my subject it woudl be normal, but the negative space makes the photo like woah....it probably still won't score well but i think i really was able to use the negative space well
