Anyone doing this? I started to add a few photos, then I had a friend send me a quote from their terms and conditions (The part we all forget to read)...and it basically gives ownership of the photos to 'facebook'.com. Now, I emailed them asking about it. The response was that they would never reproduce or use any images without permission. A very short and to the point email. I requested something in writing as I am a 'professional photographer' and don't want my images reused. Anyways, I haven't heard anything back yet. I've heard the term data-mining when talking about 'facebook'.

I wouldn't post anything but snapshots in there. Yes, they'll be seen by thousands of people around the country but they'll also be seen by thousands of people around the country who probably wouldn't mind 'using' your pictures.

ETA: but I guess that's no different than anywhere else...including here...

I just went and read their terms and then read the terms here at DPC......they are basically the same. So bdenny what you are saying is sort of a double standard. You wouldn't post anything but snapshots there but you would post some of your best work here? Doesn't make sense.

Edited to say:
bdenny.....looks like you edited your message as I was posting

Right now there's an option that allows only friends to see the albums. I doubt my friends are interested in selling them. BUT it's stored on their server for THEM to use...

Isn't that just a site to find friends like Orkut ? I only have a mug shot posted there.

I keep a good collection of my shots on 'Facebook', but I resize them all down to 640x480 and plaster by copyright/name across them. I figure at that size, there's not too much your average person could do with them, and I've yet to have a problem (knock on wood!).

yeah but it's a way to show friends back home what I can do...with smaller low res images.

Sounds more like a promise than a legally binding statement, even more so as their T&C state the opposite. Basically they could publish a book from whatever you type on 'facebook'.
I've only uploaded my profile picture. The problem is when other people start uploading photos you took of them. They give copyright which they do not own to 'facebook'.

I've got quite a lot there - but smaller sized, low res, plastered with copyright statement.

whatever i put on 'facebook', goes up as a max dim. 640, jpeg quality 70. 'facebook' further compresses it so theres tons o artifacts. theres no way anyone will be using those images commercially... at any rate, i put links in the description to my website, if anyone cares to see the rest of my stuff..
