"Since these images are public domain, no permission is needed if you want to use them. However, please give credit to the National Weather Service if you use them."

Seems sorta odd...

Hmmm ... maybe you don't want to donate it on that basis. I haven't read their fine print for a long time -- I'll have to re-check that aspect of it.

I'm in Washington. ;)

...either way! There's still a lot in Oregon.

Why did I think you're in Portland? Did you move? Where was my notice?

I live in the Portland suburbs on the Washington side of the Columbia River. Sometimes I think I live in Oregon too...

levyj413 -- that "circumhorizontal arc" on the national geographic site -- I happen to be in Spokane, WA shooting the Northwest Regional Skyhoundz Canine Disc competition (frisbee dogs). The competition shut down for a few minutes when it appeared. It was *very* bright and vivid. A cop that was there for security at the event yells at me, "Hey... YOU!" I'm thinking -- "what? I have a photographer's pass to be where I am." "Hey... Mr. Photographer... did you get a shot of that?!"

Here's the shot I took to avoid going to jail. :P

You guys get all the luck! That is sweet! I am probably inside watching spongebob or something and miss all this good stuff.

That shot is sweet Brian. I found a few other shots from that 2006 arc and it looked pretty darn impressive. I can see how things shut down while "the show" was on...

Anything predominately blue pixelates like crazy with increased contrast or saturation.

I see them a lot in the winter here (Colorado Front range) when I'm driving up into the mountains on winter days. The funny thing is, often I need to be wearing sunglasses to spot them. They're very faint (but there) for the naked eye.

Yeah, I can imagine taking such a image and entering it into "painting with light" and some bozo criticizing the contrail in the middle of it.

It would probably be you doc. LOL

Don't worry Cindy, I was piloting it at the time. Just trying to screw up one of doc's shots, and now
he's got an entry. arrrgggghhhhh!
Wanna ride the new RainBow Warrior sometime?

took this shot this afternoon and was wondering if it is also considered a circumhorizontal arc or not. It was almost completely around the sun. I did get some other shots but they didn't show the size of it like this one.

I took this picture a couple of years ago, it ended up in the Cloud Appreciation Society's 2007 calendar. They called it a Fallstreak Hole Cloud (also known as a Hole Punch Cloud) with a circumhorizontal arc.

whose were you talking about, cause mine couldn't be lens flare when it can be seen with the naked eye....or maybe you were just playin, not sure.

Karen, that is a cool shot. Someday I'll have to find my images I took of some storm clouds forming over me, the clouds were like two waves rolling across the sky ...needless to say I only too like 3 shots then ran for cover lol.

NOAA Photo Gallery might be a good place for research on clouds and other atmospheric phenomena.

... or here at Atmospheric Optics

I've seen that phenomenon before, it's like a circular rainbow around the sun. I just call it a sun halo, I am sure it has a technical name though.

This seems to be a Circumscribed Halo -- I guess I have one somewhat like that too ...

I guess I learn something new. I thought it was lens flare when I shot these.
