In some recent posts, I showed an old camera that belonged to my grandfather that my dad gave me recently. I also have a lot of negatives taken with that camera that show an era long gone. These negatives are documented telling briefly what each image is.

I plan to spend time in 2004 making at least 500 photos that show my town the way it is today. Maybe 50-60 years down the road, someone will enjoy looking at my photos as much as I enjoy looking at the ones my grandfather took... I also plan to document each photo so that future viewers will know what they are looking at...

that is a great legacy to pass on... hopefully someone 60 years from now.. maybe a relative of yours... will add to it too. By then, do you think the images will be holographic.. or something "better"? :)

Great idea. I would love to do this in my "hometown" (where I grew up)over the next year. Be hard to get there and catch the things I want (2 hours drive away). Fun to do, along with (was it Konador?) the idea of taking a shot from the exact spot every month. Gonna do that one, too.

That's an awesome idea. Looking back thru old photos that someone cared enough to document is really a treat. When you're done with your project, maybe make it a book? (Not that I know a thing about publishing.)

Neat idea, lots of work but all fun.

Might even be worth getting it bound up professionally as a book.

I think it is a great idea! I have a fascination with old photos and old cameras too. I think it is very special that you have within your reach the negatives and notes your family member created...I'm sure your 2004 project was destined to happen....good luck with it, and I hope you share the results with us in this group!!

Sounds like a great idea John! One that ynow doubt you can pull off with ease.

After getting caught by the geneoalgy research bug I got very inertested in old photos. I restored quite a few.

I have one of the family homestead in upstate NY (Sacket Harbor) from 1884. All the rocking chairs in the front yard and the men standing by the women. Not a smile one :)

It would be very intersting to see all the old photo that you have.

Best of luck.

I'm gona do something simular in my tow. It's just small town, somewhere around 3000 people and I'm gona walk around the town and take picture of every house.
When I have finished that I'm gona set up a website where people can search for house by streets and in the future I hope that people will send me information about the houses like when it was built.
I will post a url here when this will be ready.
Because I live in Iceland then I can't start taking picture until next sumer. It's to dark now. The sun is only up like 2 hours now but after 22. december the day starts to be longer :)

Shooting the photos will just be part of it... after all, they will just be average snapshots. The fun part of the process will be documenting the images...

Maybe you could look at ways to show the new photos along with the old ones and use them to show how the town and it's citizens have changed over the years. Just a suggestion. I think it's a really cool project and I hope you'll share it when you're ready.

Does that camera offer audio annotations? Seems like that feature was made for projects like this. Maybe you should do this project with a "snapshot camera" ...
