I read all these threads in the forums wondering about how people can vote this shot or that shot so low, when "clearly" it is superior work. Then I read this quote in Newsweek from John Currin, responding to criticism of his work.
"I can't disagree that strongly. I find it very difficult to argue with esthetic criticism of my work. It's like arguing with a woman who doesn't find you attractive, and you say 'C'mon! You've got to find me attractive!' It's not really a logical process. You love certain things because you love them -- the way you love your kids or something."
Now, he's not talking about technical issues, no one doubts his skill in applying paint to canvas, but about someone who just doesn't like his work.

So it's OK to not like a photo in a challenge? And to vote it low? It's OK even if you can't put into words, in a tone that doesn't offend the photographer, the reason why you don't particularly care for their pride & joy? That's "clearly" a radical notion Spaz. |

I'm not suggesting that we should accept outright rudeness in comments/feedback to each other. When we get comments that indicate a dislike for something we have created, we should just accept that some people just aren't going to like our work.
The people who submit to the challenges here on DPC have put their creative effort into that work and believe that it is good enough to submit. Some develop a perception that everyone else will agree with their own assessment of their work and seem to get upset when that doesn't happen.

Spaz is right. The quote is right.
As for giving a comment on the work, forget it. I don't comment on everything either. If the photo inspires me to comment, I will. Otherwise, I pass it by.

Yeah, I guess it would be rude to tell someone, "Oh, your kid has ugly eyes and they're crooked, and her ears are waaaay too big, and what is that thing on her face? A what? Oh, no, she looks awful!"
Oh well. I'd never thought of picts as your kids before :))
Addition: HEY, when did I get that Christmas hat? I like it.
