Where can I find good quality lenses relatively cheaply in Australia? I'm going for a telephoto anywhere up to 200mm but must have f2.8 or wider as it is for sports photography in all lighting conditions. Trying to land a job and this seems to be a requirement, I have been advised that I will struggle with my 75-300 4.5-5.6.

Been looking at australian camera stores and am being hamstrung that not many have lenses for my camera - a because it's so new and b because the konica minolta lenses that will also do the trick are all gone. Is it worth looking overseas?

HELP!

Sony Alpha100 is a new camera (first DSLR for Sony), and Sony is really new in the DSLR market...I think the best way for you is to sell your camera/lenses and go with either Nikon or Canon systems.. I'm not saying Sony is not as good as the others, it's just that going with Nikon or Canon gives you a lot of flexibiliies when it comes to choosing lenses and accessories. You're trying to land a job, look around to see what others in your field use.

Yeah, I see what your getting at, but I passed on the 400D and the D70 as they didn't feel as good in my hands and had pretty much the same features, without, may I add, image stabilization in the camera. I am also wondering if anyone knows a good source for used minolta lenses.

Have a look here The Sonnar T* 1,8/135 ZA looks like it would be a pretty nice chunk of glass.

Might try Photobuff out of Melbourne. They seem to have Sigmas with a Minolta mount
//photobuff.com.au/index.php?main_page=indexy
Or try Digital House //www.digitalhouse.net.au/store/browse.asp?idCategory=20&brand=7 They appear to have some Sony lenses.

the lens you need is the CARL ZEISS G LENS if you are serious about sport
it has a F2.8 constant apature the price i $nz 5449.95. not cheap but look at it as an investment, I have used the Minolta " G" series lens and they are as good or better than the "L" series Canon lens its 70/200mm

I bought my 70-200 f4.0L from B&H in the US, it was cheaper than I could find anywhere in Australia including postage and customs. Their service is great. I have also bought a couple of lenses from Hong Kong through ebay without any drama. Now there is always a bit of risk involved doing it that way. Who knows what can happen in transit? A speedlite I bought from an Ebay seller(located in Melbourne), who now has an online shop, arrived broken. He didn't accept any responsibilty, but said he would try to claim the cost from postal insurance. In the end I wore the expense because I was very sick at the time and couldn't follow it up, really it was the least of my worries at the time. I still buy online and some sellers will let you pick up from where they are located, just depends on where you live on how handy this is.

best place i've found in australia for buying lenses is //www.vanbar.com.au/catalogue/index.php
but a quick look at the site and I can't see a 2.8 lens for sony - really you've got the wrong system if you want to be doing sports.
If you arent happy with the cannikon options then maybe you should look at a sigma body - they are making some really cool lenses at the moment and they have plenty of f2.8 lenses available

I have Vanbar bookmarked for lighting equipment. Haven't gotten around to buying from them yet.

You can try reading Photographic Trader (bi-monthly print magazine, yellow cover, ISSN 1327-5224, current issue #126 May/June 2007), it's available in larger newsagents or from the publisher Cole Chisholm on 07-3245-5721 or enquiries@phototrader.com.au . Most of the magazine is ads - some display ads from prominent equipment shops, the rest unclassified ads from private sellers. Because it's unclassified, you have to trawl through looking for Minolta/K-M gear but some things do come up; I've picked up a couple of lenses through it.

The other thing you could do is have an automatic search set up on eBay overseas items (not just eBay AU). Or even watch for things being sold in the US for US purchase only, and see if a friendly DPCer would be willing to be your local shipping address.

Unfortunately there's not as much Minolta gear floating around in Australia as in US or Europe. :(

I reckon the place to go, is BH Photo, via online order.......the best selection, good prices, good after sales reputation, and now you'd be benefitting from the strong AUD$.
