For months I've been reading about SLRs, thinking of finally buying my first one.

I was at our local camera shop today and finally got my hands on the D80 and the D200 (I chose Nikon simply for the chance to buy the 18-200 VR lens at some point; everything I'd read said it was a tossup among the various lens systems, so that seemd as good a reason as any to choose one).

Everyone kept saying to hold them to see which felt better. I couldn't tell a difference. I was worried about the extra weight of the D200, but I couldn't tell that difference, either. (FWIW, later I was at Best Buy and held the Canon 5D and 30D and couldn't tell any difference between them or between those and the Nikons.)

It finally came down to whether I wanted to treat myself or not on the cost, and I decided to go for it!

After all I'd read about lenses, I knew I wanted a wider angle than my S2 IS had, and I don't need a major zoom right off the bat - I'm going camping in the mountains, so wider was more important. The kid at the counter suggested this one:
Tamron 17-50 f/2.8

I liked the constant F/stop, and to my delight when I got home, I found a lens testing site that loved it.

I also picked up a set of Tiffen closeup lenses (+1, +2, +4) that I'm just starting to play with, an U filter, a circular polarizer, and a 4x neutral density filter (that's 2 stops, right?).

No sleep for me tonight! :)

awesome! The only thing I found is that the D200 has the noise reductions for High-ISO and Long exposures turned down or off, best turn those on IMO.

Funny thing - didn't think I was envious in the least until this recent self-portrait turns up with 110 in the green channel and begets messages of 'programme not responding' if I try to adjust it. Who knew?

Congratulations Jeffrey. Now you'll find out where the real expense is - feeding the lens lust.
