"light meter bar" in the viewfinder...I think that's what I was trying to say. That little bar that you use the shutter dial to go up or down on the exposure. THAT'S what I've been using.

That's a good way to manually expose. That's your exposure meter and most will show 2-stops on either side of the center line which is your cameras suggested exposure.

In the case of HDR, you would be best using your camera in Aperture Priority mode, taking a meter reading and adjusting so you have a correct exposure (center bar on the light meter). Then adjust your shutter speed higher until that light meter is all the way to the left (typically the second large bar). Take a shot there, then bring the shutter speed down one full stop (this would be the first main bar to the left of center), take a shot. Adjust the exposure back to center (which was the cameras initial indicated correct exposure). Take a shot there. Adjust the shutter speed down again (e.g. smaller shutter speed = longer exposure) one full stop (this should be the first main bar on the light meter to the right of center) and take a shot. Finally adjust the shutter down one more full stop (2nd main bar to the right of center) and take your last shot.

This gives you a 5 stop exposure range. You can further go one stop up and down to achieve 7 full stops of exposure range, which some HDR gurus recommend.

With my D200, I can use its automatic bracketing by setting it to 7 stops in full stop increments and shoot off 7 quick shots, which is doing the same thing I described above only much quicker.
