I want to remote trigger a flash. What is a good flash, and how could I remote trigger that little bugger since I only have a d50?

Try a flashcube. It's a little device that you slip on to the hot shoe of your remote flash, and it triggers the remote by the light flash of the on camera flash.

I send her the links to this stuff, but that usually means that she will buy anything but whatever I send links to.

Flash slave, "flash cube" .

I bought one from this eBay seller a few days ago, and it seems to work fine for me. It has to "see" the flash from your camera in order to make the remote flash work. It does not communicate with the camera however, so all the remote flash shots would have to be worked out manually about getting correct exposure.

That seems easy. What about flashes. I was looking at the nikon and the sigma.

I use the S B 80 DX Nikon, but rarely. I bought it to shoot a friends wedding group shots a couple of months ago, and that is about all I have done with it. I like it fine so far.

whats your budget?
the "eBay wireless triggers" combined with any flash - a used sb-28 sb-26 an el cheapo vivitar - would work better than optical slaving IMO.
The triggers plus a decent flash could be had for about $120 or so.

I want something nice. Few hundred or so.?
05/22/2007 11:42:25 PM · #12
For anything serious, I would opt for the wireless triggers (radio) as they do not depend on line of sight. A little more money, but what is the perfect shot worth? I got the "flash cube" for doing night photos and having the flash near part of the subject area, like old houses ect.

Forgive me for the silly question but...

How does the flashcube works? do you attach it to your "off-camera" flash and then when you trigger the "in-camera" flash it activates the other one??

Thanks for the help

A SB-26 will trigger off almost any master flash, including the D50. You have to put the D50 onboard flash on manual mode. They're not available new any longer but can be had for 100-150 on ebay. If you really want something nice and you've got the budget, check out pocket wizards. Google those words. They're the Caddy of RF slaves. They can usually be had for about 180 each. You'll need 2. One will fit the camera hotshoe.

The cube is just a little thing that attaches to the remote flash unit with a little hot shoe on the top of it. The change in light level when the on camera flash goes off triggers the switch in it, firing the attached flash unit. It is a little smaller than a 35mm film can.
It also has provision, 1/4 threaded hole, and male hot shoe, on the bottom to attach it and the flash to a flash stand or tripod. The one that I have needs no batteries.

I know how you can do it...

and swap that 18-55 for a 18-70 3.5-4.5, get a free 1 GIG lexar card, get a free 512 MB card, and an extra battery.

No, seriously though, have you considered picking up a d70 though?
05/23/2007 01:26:25 AM · #17
Ya, that is an idea. No flash though.

If you have the $'s get the Nikon SB800 which will act as a master flash on the D-50 - with that flash on the D50 you can trigger almost any of the other Nikon cheaper flashes (SB600, SB400, etc.). I have the 800 and two 600's and this combo works greast. Of course it was'nt the cheapest route to go. However these flashes will outlast my D-50 when I upgrade to a D200 or D80 in the future.

This sounds like a great way to go. I like the idea of having about 3 and also being able to upgrade in the future.

Although it's technically wireless it's not radio triggered.
Also, I find all the extra "communication flashes" annoying.
But, you do get ttl whereas with the el cheapo eBay radio triggers will not - pocket wizards will I believe.
If you're talking "a few hundred bucks" I'd get the pocket wizard, an sb-600/800 and a couple sb-2X's.

SB-26 on eBay

Don't forget your local camera shop, I found a nice used one for about $80.
And the "X" in "sb-2x" just meant sb-26, sb-24, sb-25 etc. Really, any relatively cheap speedlight.
