I find the idea of referring to a film-based form of photography as "analog" to be rather amusing. I suppose in a stretch of the imagination this term, analog, is appropriate. The logic I assume is to refer to film-based photography as the opposite of "digital" photography. Therefore, analog. However, I am not convinced this this logic is valid.
Film-based photography is a chemical process, otherwise, it is an identical process to digital photography - iris, shutter, optically, etc. The film grain is similar to the pixel. So, they are not complete opposites as one might guess. The difference occurs at the stage of rendering light to paper / media.
I wish I could think of a more appropriate word to offer to best describe it. Since I can not, then perhaps "analog" is acceptable.

If the truth be known, both CCD and CMOS integrated circuits are analog devices, the digital part happens downstream of these chips!
Makes me go, "hmmmmm".

Gonna keep this short because I have to go.
The only reason I'm scanning the negatives is to be able to show you guys the results of my first results. After this, ofcourse I'm gonna scan the new images to add to my site, but I'm also planning to print the results in the darkroom. Myself.
Working with film, not seeing the results before you get the negatives, is awesome. It's such a different experience then working digital.
And you might find it amusing, but you can't find a more appropriate word yourself. Ah well. Let's keep it analog then ;) |
