The flip side of that being that they are NOT exposed to the car pollution that causes a higher number of allergy/asthma cases in the higher traffic areas in inner cities.

The kids with the higher allergy rates were not necessarily inner city kids or other kids who lived in polluted areas, rather they lived in suburban areas, or even fairly rural areas, with minimal exposure to ranching/farming.

There have been studies done that have tied higher numbers of children with allergy/asthma directly to living within 1/4 mile of a high traffic corridor. I recall one such study being done in Denver if I remember correctly.

I don't doubt that.

The paper I mentioned discussed the lower allergy rates of children exposed to farming and ranching.

Actually that was a big concern as a confounder, but a study was done looking at East Germany vs West. They expected more asthma and allergies in East Germany with more pollution, but actually found less. They concluded it was the cleanliness issue which was the difference.

Now that being said, we do know that diesel particulates are pretty bad for asthmatics. However, the hygiene hypothesis is concerned with the development of asthma not what makes it better or worse after you have it.

The Hygiene Hypothesis

I'm surprised there isn't an acknowledgment of Gallagher's contribution to this theory since he frequently spoke about it in his act during the 70's.

I worked at an arcade that had an attached pizza joint, and sometimes I'd help them during rushes. I looked in the back once and saw one of the younger employees spit on a pizza. I dropped what I was doing and confronted her. She said, "what.. the lady is a bitch!" I took the pizza from her and dumped it in the trash.

The kids that generally worked there were 16-17. They didn't care about much other than looking cool infront of their friends.
