I got hit pretty hard on my Waldo last night. I had been as high as a 5.2 and hadn't dropped below a 5 all week. Woke up to this score this morning....

Christian,

That's the reason I haven't entered a Free Study in awhile, but I have this time. I think it's one of my best images, too, and it looks like it will be lucky to break 5 (yes, I know it's early days yet). It's one thing to shoot for a challenge, take what I get in terms of subject, and submit to see how I did against everyone else shooting under the same constraints. It's quite another to have picked what I think is quite possibly my best image from June, processed in a way that I really like so that the final appearance really works for me, and have it sit early on at 4.5 and now at 4.8 (just barely beating my SciFi entry, which is at 4.7 and was submitted knowing it wouldn't do well).

Probably not an experience I'll be repeating anytime soon.

Hope yours gets closer to where you think it belongs, and maybe let's talk after and see whether we see what the voters missed (I doubt I can bring myself to vote the Free Study given how my shot is doing; selfish reaction, but it is what it is).

Best,

Rob

Yo! Sitting here in the lobby of the hotel trying to load cards onto my all too slow laptop. Much as I don't want to buy a new one to take to the desert and possibly have it get ruined or broken or stolen, I fear I may have to. One of the things I'd like to do while I'm there is go back and edit old stuff and this beast is just too freakin' slow. Especially with CS3. It warns me when I open Bridge - "Yo, you DO know this thing ain't gonna cut it for Photoshoppin', don't ya?" Or something like that.

By the way, save up those pennies and do what it takes to get your butts over here next year should Nasti tolerate another workshop. (We took a collection today to buy her a new strobe - one got fried yesterday.) It really has been an awesome experience - mostly just meeting everybody! I'll be here another day, as will jaded_youth and I think we'll take in the zoo and an "old city". If our feet can take another day.

As for Free Studies, I departed from my norm a bit this time but I usually use Free Studies to enter stuff I really like that I pretty much know is not DPC friendly. I do it for me, and for the few with whom it may strike a chord. I never count on a score in those instances - it's just a personal thing. I think it's a lot easier to deal with if you look at it in those terms.

yep, that's why i do the free studies too. i just thought, for once, that it might have been dpc friendly too. guess it's just too quiet. so, robh, don't stop entering the free studies - that's when i get the really good comments i find, from people whos opinion i really respect.

i would love to go to next year's euro-gtg. lets hope it's happening, and i'll start the piggybank now.

Yeah, I'm with you guys on the free study angst. After watching my quite-happy-with-it-personally shot dip into the fours with the latest vote, I immediately turned off my scores. I won't be able to stand the week if I don't. :0

Sci-Fi Celebration 4.87
Burst of Color II 4.79
Where's Waldo III 5.12
Free Study 2007-06 6.10 (jejeje)

I make up for it in quantity - Weekend shot ready to roll...

If the internet connection holds (it likes to take naps) I'll be in for Weekend with a pretty much guaranteed 4-something shot that I happen to think is quite fun. :-)

I get to meet Juliboc & her husband for breakfast tomorrow. They are passing through my neck of the woods so we thought we'd hook up. I'm really looking forward to meeting her. Bmartuch & his wife will be there too. :)

I never get to meet anybody *pout* No one ever comes to Norwich (but then, given recent news, other things hopefully also pass us by because we're a small UK city).

As for Free Study angst, I'm right with Christian on this one, and I'll join with Alan:
Oooooohhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmm----Teeeeeeeaaaaammmmmmmmm-Ssssuuuuucccccckkkkkk

And I'm thinking of a weekend shot as we speak, but I'm not sure I'll do it (not sure I like it).

Best!

RobH, you would have more friends if you supported a better team, one 20 odd miles down the road from you...Ipswich!! :))

I lived there for a few years in the late '70s, early '80s when we won the league, the FA Cup and Europe!!

But perhaps, we UK members can arrange a GTG which is easy to get to and photogenic. Of course, we will allow for your travelling time via Donkey power :))

I got my camera dusted off again, and had a blast at the nearby botanical garden (even if we were delayed by spilled greased pig parts). None of my pictures were challenge worthy, but it did feel good to look through the lens again.

Been driving for two days straight. Just got situated in a hotel in Ann Arbor, MI -- about an hour from Hipychik's home town. I'm looking forward to meeting her too, and BMartuch. I don't know if we will have time to go shooting together, but I am hoping we will be able to stop by Frankenmuth, one of Bob's haunts, for a few shots anyway.

I'm quite disappointed in my score for Color. I think is is very pretty, and fits the challenge perfectly, but it has been consistently at 5.3. At least it got one Fav!! Does anyone beside me feel that about half the shots in that challenge are DNMC? The details of the challenge say that color should be used to offset your subject from the rest of the photograph. It seems to me that there are a lot of shots where the color subject is the only thing in the photograph -- the color fills the frame.

It's so much fun to read about the various GTG's that have been going on! I'm especially jealous of the Europe GTG. I looked at the schedules with all those models and professional set-ups, etc. And Deb, that's a great photo of Sirdar! And it is fun to see a candid of Svetlana, too!

Aww that's too bad you guys did not arrange a quick GTG. I'm about an hour SE of Ann Arbor. Where are you guys headed on your trip? Have fun!

Well, since my FS dipped below 4.0 this morning, I pulled my Weekend shot which was waaaaaaaay weaker, my Burst of Color has leveled off at 4.5, and to tell you the truth, challenges have ceased to be any fun for me at all. It may be a long time before I bother with a challenge.

And, oh yeah.......my kid is doing a full point better than me in the FS.

I'm going back to side projects where I'm shooting for me instead of trying to make half-a$$ed ideas fit into a challenge. I actually really liked both my Burst of Color and FS, and I think you guys will too, but the damn trolls are just spanking me hard.

What's funny is......I was looking at my profile......people have picked photographs of mine 41 times.

Go figure!

I don't know yet if I'll be able to check in tomorrow morning or not - but we are leaving early on for a week away camping.

Oh Michelle, I'm so sorry, I didn't realize you were this close. Terry and Bob both told me they were close to I-75, so we set up a breakfast meeting at Birch Run. If I had known you were in the area, we might have been able to work out something else.

We are headed for the Upper Peninsula (Michigan -- for those who aren't from these parts). We are expected for dinner in Big Bay, about 4 hours West of the bridge (Mackinac Bridge -- for those who aren't from these parts). That's why we have so little time for the GTG.

So my challenge entries for the next month will be quite different than usual -- no wading bird sanctuaries, no zoo, no orchid center, no Butterfly World. But lots of woods and lakes and rivers and all the things that go with that. And definitely lots of fun.

Hi Julianne - thanks for the PM. And I sent one back.

I live about 45 mins. SE of Toledo. So not too far then from MI.

Have a safe trip up to the UP!
