yay, kelly! can't wait to see some shots from it.

happy birthday, shez!

hey, chris! good to see you. i've been checking your site every now and then - it's looking pretty good.

deb, i am soooo envious

we haven't had sun or heat for aover a week now. our dryer broke (ok, i broke our dryer) so we've had a load of clothes sitting in the washer for 4 days - we put it on in a rare sunny break, and it promptly started to rain again.

gah.

Kelli, good to hear about the internet access. Will be very good to have you back online a little more!

All - just got back from a Rolling Stones concert in Frankfurt. Amazing. I can't hear and my face hurts from smiling the entire time. Mick Jagger is way better looking in person, and has more energy than a human being should be allowed to have. Keith Richards still rocks. The concert was incredible. No pics - tickets said no cameras - but I did see folks with the small pocket point and shoots. And using the binoculars of some other folks there, I spotted two still photo shooters - both women, by the way. All the rest were using video cams for the images being broadcast on the screen.

A very neat thing - the tickets INCLUDED train transportation to and from the venue. How smart is that??

Anyway, way freakin' past my bedtime, but I'm still wired. I think I'll be late for work... :-)

That is so awesome! I wish you would have invited me! :(

Oh, yay, I was in the MS photo tournament against a multiple ribbon winner, and I beat him! Woohoo!

No hope for this week - my score is over 5, but only just. But oh well. posthumous chose the picture, so I can at least claim some counter-culture points if my score sucks :)

Kelly - yay, finally! Enjoy the camera :D

Shez - happy birthday!

Deb - the Rolling Stones rock! I saw them once years ago, and loved every minute of it!

"I've noticed that voters get irritated when what the subject is looking at is out of frame."

I noticed this observation from Skewsme in a comment. It is not something I ever realized. I like eyes that aren't looking straight into the camera, e.g. most of my children shots. So I'm going to keep that in mind, and watch for that trend in the voting. It probably won't change the way I take my pix, but it may help in deciding which to enter in the challenges.

Like this?

Personally, I like it when a subject is shown like that, makes me wonder what they're looking at. Although I guess the overall impact has to do with the expression that is captured, as well.

But I agree that DPC voters as a whole don't like mystery all that much. :)

Personally, I'm likin' mysterious eyes too. But when I shoot 'em, I git clobbered ;-)

I think it's difficult to get shots like that and make them look like they were taken with intent. Most of the time the voters go: 'Oh, that's a nice expression, but how silly of you to have framed it wrong'.
The one above works because the arrangement of light and shadow conveys the intentionality, so people are willing to take it seriously, and take it or leave it from there according to personal preference. Whereas a lot of the time they get marked down immediately, because the voters just assume you messed up.

Just my interpretation of it...

yes! dpc voters care about intentionality!

but the funny thing is that the truly great photographers make everything seem unintentional, like a wonderful miracle.

And note the delightful inclusion of background. (I'm beginning to channel Arcady, I think...)

That model can't sell many products to you if he/she is looking away.

Who are the truly great photographers?

I'm not gonna philosophically dispute the concept, I'm just interested :)

For a generally contemporary bunch of people that I think are great, I regularly visit the AfterImageGallery. Some pretty inspiring stuff there, with new additions on a fairly regular basis.

Best,

Don Giovani should get the Yappie for all his great outstanding comments.

Just a couple of things to say,
1, The DPL challenge has really changed the voting on photos' IMO, in the last 4 challenges 3 have started at 6+ when the scoring has opened and held well for 3 to 4 hours and then for no reason dropped to also rans, 2 below the 4s', 1 just above 5 and now in transiton started at 6.375 and after 3 hours fell to 5.6 now

1, comment saying he can not see the transition, you would have to be blind.

2, I would like to thank all the team suck members who helped with thier generosity in the klstover camera replacement, a special thanks to Jeff, levyj413for handling the admin, and communication.
