Brian, don't understand your comment at all. It's not Dubai, by the way.

Sorry, just trying to lighten the scene a little.

Can you all stand a momentary moment of mommy bragging ?

I think many of you know that my oldest son has Asperger's Syndrome - a high functioning form of autism. Today - I can whole-heartedly brag about him.

We went to the Zoo today. We get a family membership each year, and go quite often - it's close enough to be a nice 1/2 day trip for us.

Today, we took the kids through the Dinosaurs Alive exhibit - a very loud exhibit, btw - and while Boo did hold his hands over his ears, he did NOT flap, he did NOT scream, he did NOT bolt, he did NOT flop down on the floor, and he did NOT space out. Hubby and I told him that the dinos were big toys (they're robots, more or less, that move and make sounds), and tried to relate them to the characters in Land Before Time.

Also - he went on the pony ride, at his own request. We have tried two or three times before to have him go on a pony ride, with only screaming and crying ensuing. Today - he seemed to fully enjoy it.

AND (yes, there is MORE) - we went in to the Splash Zone with the kids at the end. This is something we try to do just before we go home on most hot days - it's refreshing. But the spraying water has always scared him. Today - he was out there, running, playing, LAUGHING, and really enjoying himself.

It was a GREAT day !

It's definitely a "mommy's lost it" moment in his eyes

I put up the rest of my half-decent Chicago GTG pictures in my portfolio; these were potentials for the Free Study, but my Free Study entry did not come from this photo set at all.

I just read an interview with Larina Warnock, a cofounder of a literary website.

One of her statements about poets would be appropriate for photographers.

"Poets, expecially beginning poets who haven't yet built a lot of confidence in their own work, often change their poems significantly based on the comments of a huge audience. Over time, many poems begin to sound alike and poetic style can be seriously harmed."

"As they begin to build confidence in their work, though, they also begin to discriminate between comments and learn when to take advice and when to simply thank their peers and leave the poem alone."

Rob: left you some comments.

Lea: hooray! Such days must fill your heart to overflowing.

Mary: very, very important quote. Thanks for sharing! I think that, whether it's a technical comment (more focus, higher contrast, etc.) or something more artistic (I would've left out the blurred guy), the photographer needs to put it in context of what he/she wanted to do in the first place. There are technical comments especially that can help someone learn their craft, but once learned, it's quite possible to violate "norms" for good reasons. As Don knows, I'm slowly learning to do that deliberately.

Lea - what an excellent day for you and your son! Many thanks for sharing it with us, too!

I have been really depressed over what I'd call a severe case of the ordinaries and I haven't been able to shake it.

I just discovered the 30 Day Ordinary Things Project and it's funny how this will most likely snap me out pof my funk.

The last time I got this way, the Where I Live project got me back up again, and I'm really looking forward to this one.

Mary, that last part that I snipped down, and changed "poem" to "work" really spoke to me.

Thanks!
