Good Morning!

I received a few comments on my Seuss entry that led me to think some or mayhap many people think I did alot of post-processing on my Dr. Seuss Entry to get that dramatic look in the lighting. In actuality I did very little.

I want to share with you a technique that brings out some dramatic lighting on subjects that are between 5 feet or 2 feet away from you.

Challenge Entry:

Original Unprocessed Photo:

The clouds and sky looks dark and nightlike in the photo but it was a really bright and blue sky day when I took the photo. With the underexposure flash fill technique the strong backlighting or strong light far in the background grows darker throwing the main object lit with the flash fill into dramatic contrast with it's background.

I used an F-stop of 6.3 (or higher in some cases),a shutter speed of 1/1250 a second, and the flash unit on my camera to light up the 'Truffula Tree' and it's base. I was about 2 feet away from my main subject and had the camera on a tripod to avoid any shake.

Post-processing of this image was:

-Square Crop
-Clone tool to clone out minor reflections on the metal on the pipe cleaners
-Clone tool to tone down the flash reflection on the ceramic tree trunk at bottom
-Clarify
-From 3264 x 2448 resized 60% then Sharpen.
-Resize again at 55% then Sharpen to prevent loss of the sharp details from the resizing
-Color Adjust Brightness -3 Contrast 9
-Add border
Save for web.

For the sake of another example another photo that I have used the Underexposure Flash Fill Technique to dramatic effect is
