Yeah, Cape Cod. Wanna come visit? Also Plymoth Plantation, on the mainland across from Cape Cod. Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, ferries from Cape Cod. Cape Cod is where it's at.
Can you tell I live here? Come visit...

Holyoke is inland about 90 minutes from the coast. Pretty country. Try to make plans to come out here for an overnight. I got a room.

Well, if you can sneak away EARLY in the morning (real early) and drive tot he Cape, I can meet you and show you around my secret marshes. Then you can go home in mid-afternoon. But the light is best early and late, so....

I'm between where you will be and Bear_Music and while I STRONGLY recommend getting to the Cape and visiting with Bear - he made this shy girl feel content and happy driving around in the slush and snow one day - theres a lot to see close to where you will be.
I'm in that area nearly every other weekend as its where my husband and I haunt for coffee and quiet time (and some good places to take the Harley out).
Shelburne Falls - not just the bridge and the potholes. Get to the glassblowers (same street as the potholes) and if you get there on a good day, peek into the candlemakers shop.
I know of a place in Heath where I found a place where Great Blue Herons nest every year. I can give you directions.
Catamount State Forest is TEEMING with bears and Moose and all kinds of wildlife.
AS for towns - small towns are in abundance here - Colrain, Heath, Charlemont. Those are all along the river. Bridges and rolling rapids, mills and farmland. Interesting town centers and town greens.
Lenox and Lee (trains and mountains) further towards NY.
Yankee Candle is in Deerfield. Model Trains and miniatures - check out the surrounding tourist trap for the Dinosaur Museum and other Mowhawk Trail stuff. Wierd locals with stories to tell.
There's also the Butterfly Conservatory in South Deerfield.
IF you come out my way (Westminster) you have Barre Falls Conservation Area (This was taken there ) in Hubbardston is fantastic. Lots of ruins, great forest.
Royalston is loaded with lots and lots of waterfalls. If you go here, email me and Ill tell you how to get to the falls without getting stuck (and without a 3 mile hike) via jeep and tell you how to get to Spirit Falls wich are never talked about. They are best seen if its been raining hard - so if its been nasty thats the best place to go even over the main falls. Eat at Pete&Henrys while you are there - and the locals are AMAZING. Friendliest people in MA, I swear. Ask about places to go, and peoples doors to knock on both at the restraunt and at the general store, both in West Royalston off of Rt68.
Harvard Forest in Petersham is a working farm, old buildings and a logging research facility.
Anything on the Quabbin Reservoir is full of history. The ruins in the water, the stonewalls that just dive into the water. (Wikki) The fishing is fantastic. :) This reservoir provides the drinking water for Boston - theres amazing hiking around gates 31, 33, 34, 35. (MAPS).
Theres an abandoned Animal and Amusement Park in Princeton Ive been meaning to check out as well as well as a bird sanctuary and hiking all around Wachusett Mountain.
In Shirley in the old town center on HorsePond Rd. there is a nature preserve that is COVERED in daffodills and bulbs right now, its amazing and perfect for photos. Plus the cemetary and the center are New England picturesque.
Athol is a "rough around the edges" kind of town, its an old mill town that was hard on its luck for a long time - get to the River Rat Race if its while you are there. Its an "anything" goes river race and its awesome to watch. Also go up Rt 32 to Silver Lake. The town is all old mills and factorys around Main street.
Guh, its late. I'm sure Ill think of more. Let my brain rest and I'll be swimming on stuff closer to Holyoke when Im thinking clearer.
Edit: Ah, I found the website for the River Rat Race in Athol. HERE . Sadly it was a few weekends ago - and I missed it! Basically, its a bunch of drunk locals and a load of "seasoned canoeists" who battle it out on a freezing fast moving river...

I just moved to Mass about 2 weeks ago and have wondering where to shoot as well. I'm on Cape Cod, in the Falmouth area. I will be home during the week you are in town and would love to join in the fun if you guys have room for a Nikonian in your quest for pics. |

OK, what's with all the people wanting to bring him to the cape. You can take a great picture anywhere. The question is, what do you WANT to shoot. The cape is great if you want oceans or beaches or such. But it's a big state. OK, it's big if you have to walk it. :-)
Holyoke is right on the CT river. Gotta be a lot of great river shots, rolling hills or small towns around there. The Quabbin looks to be a short drive, I've seen some stunning photos from around there. You could also drive west - the Berkshires is a shorter drive than the cape, if mountains and trees are you bag.
And, of course, there's always beantown. :-)
