Nikon have announced that they are "developing" a budget dslr, I'm sure Canon execs must be quaking in their shoes. I guess Canon are already working on the 300D replacement so we should soon expect that to be announced soon.

Too little, too late. Canon will have a stronghold on that market by the time it hits the streets. Some are leaders, some are followers.

| I suspect Nikon pre-announced it to avoid some people buying 300Ds for xmas, in the anticipation that the D70 is good later. |

I hope to be upgrading to a DSLR sometime next year, it's nice to know there'll be another option from Nikon, though I really favor the D100 right now.

It is very strange that Nikon has not released any specifications yet. It almost seems like they know how the outside is going to be, but have not yet designed the internals or decided what they are going to put in.
No word even on resolution, I couldn't find any official Nikon site that has specs. Will it have a pentamirror or a pentaprism, what focus system, buffer, speed, ISO range, Sony 6mp D100 CCD or a Nikon JFET LBCast ?mp CMOS or a Fuji 6mp S2 SCCD, mirror lock-up (300D doesn't have it), accesoires like a battery grip.
More will be announced at the PMA, but will it be ready then and in the stores, or will it be available next Christmass? They call it groundbreaking and a great tool for everyone, but don't tell the specs? Strange.
Perhaps they tell enough to stop Nikon SLR owners switching brands, but I doubt if this is going to stop anyone else from buying stuff like the 300D, 10D, D100, *Ist D, S7000 or F828. Especially now so close to the holidays.

Gordon,
I think you are right.
With my already accumulated stable of Nikkor glass, I was going to go Nikon sooner or later anyway, however if I didn't have the stable, Canon glass looks really good. Those big white lenses take some pretty awesome pics.
