Hey! Didn't Sony say that the F828 was going to come out in November? Well, I don't know about you guys, but my calendar says December already, and I still see only pre-orders going on. Also, the original announcement that said it was coming out in November seems to have disappeared - Anyone know what the heck is going on?

This is only a guess but I am wondering if Sony are taking more time trying to improve the noise issue with the camera. The features are impressive on the camera but from viewing what few images I could find on the net it appears that noise is definitely a problem in many types of photos. I'm afraid it may end up suffering from a similar stigma as the Kodak 14N. On the other hand maybe it is going to be so popular anyways that Sony are scrambling to produce enough cameras. We'll have to wait and see.

Seems strange to hold it up just before Christmas unless they are having some kind of problem.

I had the chance to try an actual production model at a Sony dealer show in Canada. I didn't find the noise level to be too high but i hadn't the chance to really test it. I just took a couple of pictures. I don't know why it's not released yet but the Sony rep is talking about end of december.

It is postponed to late december / early january.
The shops here in Holland (Sony Europe and Nikon HQ are here) all say "expected in january". Some rumours say "early march", but I'll stick to january.
I have downloaded two low iso samples from Sony Japan today.

Sample 1
(Exif: F4, 1/25s, ISO64, manual exposure/wb, normal sharpness)
I cannot find the real point of focus, it is incredibily soft. I had expected more detail on the eye. There is some fine detail resolved in the clothing. There is some CA around the hair/background edge and some chroma noise in the hair. I also think that the hair lacks detail, I would expect more. I think it will print pretty decent, but it isn't what I'd expect from an 8mp 4 color ccd with a Carl Zeiss T in front of it.
Sample 2
(Exif: F2, 1/15s, ISO64, Auto-all program mode, normal sharpness)
Looking at hundreds of dSLR samples I am now used to a lot shallower dof at F2, this is pretty wide (it is shot at the wideangle side I believe, telephoto would work better) and it lacks a good bokeh.
The captured detail is pretty good, but there is some CA/Blooming around the highlight details that are at the edges of the frame. What bothers me the most is the high amount of chroma noise in the background. What will happen when you do this shot at ISO400?
Nothing strange going on though. I bet it will print pretty good and handle well, but it ain't the dSLR killer a lot of people want it to be.
The chroma noise can be taken out, it improves the colors a bit as well. It is just that that is an extra step in post processing and it takes a while to do it with FM Chroma Noise Reducer on my pc (Athlon 1200 266mhz 256mb DDR) because of the file size.
Note that all the samples are studio shots, doesn't say anything on how it will do outside and in normal life.

This link is for pre-orders as well.
I considered buying this camera when I bought my E-20. Should be a nice camera when they get it right, if they CAN get it right. There is some thought out there that the CCD is simply too small to make quality 8 MP images.
Since the inititial images do in fact show some problems, it could very well be that Sony is making sure they get it right. Anyway, it's obvious there's a problem because Sony lost thousands not having it ready for Christmas. |
