I made the mistake of taking a 24-hour Claritin yesterday afternoon when my nose wouldn't quit running and sneezing, stupid allergies. I'm very tired, but can't sleep. I tossed and turned for three hours, too hot and feeling my heart race until I finally just gave up. I'm extremely frustrated. I have to go to work today, I have class tonight... I need to sleep! What do you do when you can't sleep?

Hot milk with honey would answer my mother in law.
But I think it depends how many time you have left , sometimes I prefer not to sleep until next night : a good shower , coffee and let's go ! Tonight will be a better night...
If you have enough time what about soft music , warm bed and breathing relax ?

well , my two cents...

I wish I weren't lactose intolerant, or warm milk and honey would sound pretty good! I was thinking of a cup of tea, but now that I've been up for a little while I'm thinking I should at least try to go back to bed. Ugh... I am never taking Claritin again. It didn't even work, and now I have to deal with the icky side effects!

I was just reading on the side effects of Claritin because of your post. At least now I know I never want to try it!
I suspect you're going to have to give up trying, and work on relaxing and getting through the night :( Hope I'm wrong!!

Claritin is now a controlled substance because people can make meth out of it. I only take it when I need to stay up and work all night.

A shot or a beer might help. If you only get a couple hours sleep, just take a Claritin when your alarm goes off - that'll wake you up for school & work.

Sorry, I know I'm no help. :(

A couple of shots of Jim Beam might do the trick.

Yeah... it pretty much sucks. I suspect that I'm more susceptible to it since I never take even over the counter drugs unless I'm just desperate, so my body has zero tolerance for just about everything. I'm thinking I'm probably going to suffer through work today and then just stay home from class tonight. At least that would give me more time to work on the annotated bibliography for this damn paper I've been working on.

Turn on the radio and listen to NPR - that always knocks me right out. :)

Whatever you do, don't turn on the TV and start watching those infomercials! I think I've only bought a couple things like the Magic Bullet Blender thingy (it does any job in less than 10 seconds, after all!) and one or two get rich programs - they make everything sound so compelling! :/

Good luck to ya.

I've thought about posting a thread about "what to do to get to sleep" on the nights where I'm up til 4 am, but darn it...ya beat me to it! My suggestion, edit photos til your eyes go numb.

However, I found THIS to be the best solution, the only trick is that you have to take it seriously x_x-zzz
...it also helps to make it full screen.

Oh, btw the first time I watched it I banged my head so hard against my desk I cut my forehead...so remove any sharp objects from your desk.

Yeah, I just got to the part about the connection with meth. I avoid drugs with pseudoephedrine because I had a BAD reaction to prescribed ephedrine in the as a teen (resting heart rate of 160, etc.) and suspect I may react similarly.
Avoid caffeine, as it'll compound the symptoms.
Believe me, I sympathise! Sleepless nights seem to last forever, especially when you know you MUST sleep, because you MUST function tomorrow :(

When I can't sleep I eat something...tricks my body into feeling sleepy. Oh....if you want some exciting dreams have some cheese and watch what unfolds. I think of going to sleep like going to the movies!

Hmm, yes, been there for sure. I have a whole library of routines to get to sleep, but they normally take several hours. :) 20 minutes of excercise, drink plenty of water during it, then followed by a nice warm shower, eat a light supper (piece of toast and tea/water), while reading a book for about 30-40 minutes, then go to bed.

Having had sleep troubles for about 5 years, the worst thing is going to bed when I'm not tired. I'll lie there for 2 hours, and on a really bad night, I've been known to lie still for 6 hours with my eyes shut, and still not sleep!

Hey, I wonder if you can mix claratyne with other antihistamines? Maybe they'll cancel, or maybe they'll make you even more tired, but still not be able to get to sleep. I wouldn't recommend it without a doctors opinion though.

If I cant sleep I grab my pillow and get onto the lounge and put on the most boring movie I can find. Sleeping like a baby in about 20 minutes.

Oddly, I take my Claritin before I go to bed at night. Doesn't seem to be a problem for me at all. Can't live without the stuff this time of year.

To help get to sleep? Not a medically approved method, mind you, but my method of choice is NyQuil. Never fails.

I find it ironic that this entire thread of "fall asleep quick" methods took place between 4am and 6am...

LOL - and the OP apparently drifted off after the first 45 minutes!

ETA: Yeah, it's 3:30am and I'm still not sleeping. ...where's that Jim Beam??

For me it's 9pm, so I am not quite ready to go to sleep yet.

Yeah, I gave the bed another shot and this time was a bit better. Still out of it from the Claritin, but at least I slept a bit.

I always say pot cured my insomnia. That's the ony time I smoke it. 2 or 3 hits off the ol' pipe when I absolutely can't sleep, and 20 minutes later I'm out cold.

Other times I lay on the couch with my pillow and blankey and watch really boring movies on cable with the volume low.

In conjunction with Claritin, that might not be the best advice. That's definitely a "run it by the pharmacist first".

Sorry, Ken. After my 2 shots, I passed out. I just now got up and looking for the hangover cure.

If you are lactose intolerant, can you not buy "Lactaid" milk for such sufferers? My husband drinks this and it doesn't bother him.
