Ok so I'm working on a lipstick ad for my fashion photography class. I did the shoot today and wanted to get people's opinion on which shot should be the final choice. None of these are edited except raw conversion. I will be putting text on the photo as well as a small product shot of the stick itself. I have some thoughts but really would like to hear yours. Thanks so much.

I like two the best for any reason. But for your purposes it is evenly compsoed and will allow your graphics as you plan. The dust spot will be also be easier to get rid of .... ;)! |

That was actually my first instict but after staring at them all, I kind of talked myself into thinking her mouth was too open. |

You seem to have something on your sensor or lense. A black spot is in a different spot on each shot. 1 or 3 for me. Don't like the mouth open in 2 as the top lip light is wrong. |

I really like #2, it is very appealing and draws in the eye. Nice work! |

I'm not too sure. I probably would have put the lipstick out so much, esp as you see the white interior tube (perhaps get rid of it in PP). It's a nitpick but the photo IS about the lipstick.
I'd pick one or 3. 2 is pretty but it kind of keeps making me think she's about to eat it.... lol. |

I would choose no. 3, I think it is perfect for your purpose, even if maybe the aggressive and sophisticated color of the lipstick does not match with the freshness and simplicity of the model. I would see better that color with a special hairdressing, evening dress and maybe some jewels. I would choose no. 3 also because if you are adding a shot of the stick itself I think that one is enough, having two could make the picture too busy of lipsticks.
Anyway, no. 1 is my favorite as a picture, I love the lighting, but may be not as much effective, as it draws the attention more towards the model than to the lips.

I love the expression on her face in #2. Seems like perfect ad material. |

#3. Gives you some nice space to put the stick and text in too. |

LOL, its been a while since I have asked for photo specific help on here and forgot that everyone's opinions tend to make my decision even more difficult! Thanks though, keep the thoughts coming. |

2, but really none of the above. they're good, but not great IMO.
Maybe I just need to see the final product?
Dunno, guess I'm just looking for some standard glamour lighting like a ringlight, beauty dish, clamshell or something. I realize you're probably limited on options if you're using school equipment, but you need to get outside the box here. |

Thanks for the honesty. Although, I do expect the final product to have a bit more punch. I'm a photoshop nut, sometimes too much, so that's why I asked which to use before I start editing. I just don't have the time or patience to do all three. |

I instantly thought of this when I started reading the post:
Not sure if that helps, but it's at least one way to punch it up. I'm sure you have other evil schemes of your own ;)

I'm going with the first one. The second shot to me seems like she is getting ready to take a bite out it rather than apply it to her lips. JM2C.
Overall great work in the lighting on all the shots. You do need to clean that sensor hu?

from one student to another;
I don't know what you have available to you in the way of equipment, but I think a ring light would do wonders for you in these shots. if not try to use a softer light source, like a soft box or an umbrella. I think your overlighting the hand holding the lipstick.
fashion is hard stuff, that is why those guys make big bucks.

Yeah, number 1 for me too, and yeah the dust spot is not helping at all...the first shot I feel has a more sex appeal, just my thoughts, Good luck!!

#2 for sure.
But in every one of them ... I wish the eyes were more in focus. I know the eyes aren't the focus of the ad. But being out of focus just bugs me ... makes me rub my own eyes wondering if my eyes have gone blurry.

No. 1
I like the pout look, or maybe it is her eyes....and the slightly parted lips. She's HOT. I also agree the product is out of the tube a bit too much.

Let me just remind that these are all completely unedited. Dust spots, the ring on the lipstick, sharpness, can all be fixed with ease. Pose is what I'm most concerned with. I do agree with most people's comments about lighting, I would love to be more complex but I am unfortunately limited on equipment. To be clear, this was shot with a large softbox directly off camera left or sometimes directly above. I tried to get light as direct as possible and was bumping straight into my light source the entire time. If someone wants to donate a ring light, just let me know:) Thanks again guys, i very much appreciate your input |

#3. I like the other two, but #2 does look like she's going to eat it, #1 is nice...but if you are adding text and also adding the "stick" to the ad...why show it in the photo as well? My 2¢. :P

#1 is more of the Ad type of picture. Her lips are closed and it looks like she is getting ready to put the lipstick on. #2 is more of the suductive look with her mouth open some. Looks like she is getting ready to eat the lipstick. #3 just looks like you just took a picture of a woman. I think that in order to sell the lipstick you should have her showing it in her hand as if she were putting it on.
#1 by far is much better than 2 or 3.

Couldn't help but notice that #2 has about 30 more views than the others. Does this mean anything? |
