deb, further to your comment on my red barn - i'm using ken lee's quadtones, and then pattern layers for the texture. two, three or even 4 diferent patterns. i have no idea which patterns, i just flick through them until i find one i like. i set them at very low opacity, either on multiply or overlay. some are masked a little. the red barn one i also layerd on a colour version of the same image after i had converted it back to rgb, and masked it so just the buildings came through, to give the subtle colour.
i have no idea what i'm doing, i just play until i like the result!

I've never tried using patterns. I know I have some on PSP, but can you download them from somewhere?
I just looked at your barn pic too. I love that look.

I just put in my first entry in a while. Insects. I only got one shot before my dog ate the bug! Don't feel sorry for the bug, it was half dead already from exposure. LOL. I'll probably get the brown with this one. |

Does anyone else have a photo in for insects? I'm fairly happy with mine - could be just a touch sharper, but this is minimal editing. Hopefully people won't enter photos of spiders - they aren't insects.
BTW - ordered a new lens!!! Fast - opens to f/1.8 - can't wait for it to arrive!!! Also ordered a polarizing filter - probably will arrive too late to use for landscape challenge, though :-( |

No insects for me, but I may have a landscape, and I am not a landscape kinda shooter.
Did we award OOBIEs and YAPPIEs from last week? Are we due to do so? I believe the honor belongs to Chasing Butterflies - and pretty much does every week unless notified otherwise. :-) |

Thanks for the info, Christian. Do you use your own textures or do you grab them from somewhere? I think we all ought to raid Louis' stash, though - he has some really good ones. |

I'm in Insect, I have been experimenting with different Macro lens and converters. Now there is a dilemma, one shot is shallow DOF, but an unusual insect, the other is pin sharp, but a common and frankly, boring insect.
Do I gamble on DOF or sharp boringish??
Probably make the wrong choice anyway:) |

The standard Suck question - which one do you like best? Go with that one. |

Well, then, if it were me, I'd go with the unusual insect and the shallow DOF. :-) |

Yep, that's the one I entered. Took the other this afternoon and started doubting myself. You have just confirmed my choice, so now I have someone to blame if it bombs :))) |

I'll take the blame, no problem! I try to blame timfythetoo for my lackluster scores but he always refuses to accept... |

The quick rundown... most of us don't even know which sub-team we're on - we just know we're on Team Suck. But there are sub-teams, and someone does magic math every week to determine which sub-team sucks the least (it's almost always Chasing Butterflies), then that sub-team gets the honor of choosing the OOBIE and YAPPIE award winners.
OOBIE - Out of the Box
YAPPIE - An award for those who comment well and/or often
What do you have to do? Enter challenges, learn stuff, offer knowledge to others, and if you see fit to do so, nominate people for OOBIE and YAPPIE awards.
That be it in a nutshell! |

I'm in insects. You can't believe what I had to do to get a bug. Wow...that's a sentence I've never said before!
I don't think it's to good but I gave it a try. |

okee dokee, chasing butterflies has been notified of the current nominees. they have 24 hours to vote. then I will post the winners.
It's gonna be a little more chaotic with me running things, but we'll keep giving out these suckers. |

i just found ken rockwell's guide to the hidden functions on my camera. COOL! tihngs like ISO 3200, second leaf flash sync (so you get the blur behind an object in long exposures), and all the stuff i've been kvetching about. 'cause i didn't read the manual, or anything. i' think he has these for most cameras. definitely worth a look.

Kelly: try these rescue steps.
Open a full-size new file with the original image.
Also open the small version.
1) If you have only adjustment layers without masks, simply drag them from the small version to the full-size version. That is, be sure yuo can see at least some of the window for each version, with the small one in front. Click on the layer you want and literally drag it, keeping the mouse button pressed down, to the window for the full-size image.
Then the only things you need to redo are sharpening or blurring, cloning, etc. You know, stuff where you actually change the pixels themselves.
If you prefer, you can shift-click on all of the layers you want to copy over and drag them all at once.
2) If you have adjustment layers that have layer masks, resize the small one up to the original size. That'll resize the masks, and then you can again just drag the adjustment layers from the small saved version to the new full-size version.
Does that make sense?

well I put in for Landscape I hope that it does well, if not I like it. |

Makes perfect sense! I've never thought about resizing to resize the masks, and I'll be sure to keep that in mind!
Unfortunately I did a lot of cloning... LOL.
Not a big deal. Will just try to not do it again!
edit: and the shift-click thing will come in handy in some of my normal workflow... whoo! :)
