I just bought a Canon S30, and I've noticed when I download the images onto my computer, they are often very different sizes, (400 kb to 1.3 mb). I'm using the same resolution and the same compression for these though! (highest res, least compression~jpeg) (not using digital zoom either) Can anyone make sense of this? I'm not that found of the zoom browser software that came with the camera in the first place, this just seems to be an added confusion.
Thanks

Th efficiency with which the JPEG algorithm can compress the image is roughly related to the amount of detail in the image. A picture with a lot of small shapes and colors (flower patch) will be way larger than a "flat" image (foggy landscape). Try making identical exposures, one of a piece of plaid or patterned cloth, the other a solid color piece. In uncompressed TIFF format they should be exactly the same size; in JPEG I'd expect around a four-fold difference...

Thankyou! The main reason I was confused was that with my old camera I always saved as TIFFs after downloading --they were about the same size.

Darker photos, like ones taken outside at night, are generally a bit smaller than others also... It seems that more black in an image creates this smaller sized file...

Ask Gordon about this... he will know exactly why.. he's the JPEG compression guru I belive...
