OK... I'm looking for PS lessons again! So give me your best take on what you would have done to make this image score above a 6! I'd like detailed instructions on what you did (because I really suck and have to look a lot of stuff up in my dummies book). I'm using PSCS (not CS2) so if we could limit what is possible to that, it would help. I'd just love to break a 6, even once! Thanks everyone!

Here is my FS entry that scored a 5.4

and here is xianart's version which I'm sure would have scored much higher...

Ok, here is my try. I used PSP X but I'll translate to PSCS as best I can.

Click on thumbnail for larger image

1) I used idnic's move the light tutorial to darken the background and the body of the back gator then merge all layers.

2) I made a duplicate of the background and applied two USM treatments and changed the layer to Soft Light.
a) 0.3 Radius 300 Amount 3 Threshold
b) 50 Radius 15 Amount 3 Threshold
c) Soft light
d) Reduce opacity to 61% or to taste.

3) Merge all layers

4) Hue/Saturation adjustment
a) Shift hue +9 towards yellow to neutralize some of the red
b) Desaturate yellow channel only -41

5) Just a touch more USM: 1 Radius 10 Amount 3 Treshold.

These are all Advance Editing techniques.

Tim

Edit: I spell like an engineer

Hi Kelli!

This is pretty quick and very dirty, not sure it will be helpful but I couldn't resist - I love talking animals! Steps are in the comments.

Sure, why not.... very quick and very dirty... Couldn't do much with the small file though.

Adjustment layer (Overlay) to burn in shadows and highlight eye/face of gators.

Color Burn Adjustment layer. Large Green brush used to burn in green coloration, switched to small yellow brush to bring in eye coloration. Large Red Brush for mouth.

Color adjustment to bring up greens and yellows (overkill).

Saturation layer to soften above step.

Circular gradient layer Black -> Tranparent to bring focus to gator's eye.

.... or something like that.

ETA: Processing steps.

Thanks guys! These are all terrific. I'll play with it some tomorrow and see if I can put some of each best element together.

Hey Kelli - here's a quick shot at it:

Added a curves layer & a brightness layer and used them for dodge & burn.
Also a slight USM on the snouts.

Just really "painting" with the new layers to adjust the lighting.

:O)
btw - cool shot!
