I'm on dial-up and it takes forever to load some of the threads because some people (non-members)post the whole picture or worse yet, several big pictures! So, it would be really nice if there was a place on this site these people could use to post their picture on a temporary basis so they would be able to just post the thumb in the forum. Or else, have a script that pops up when someone tries to post larger pictures in the forum that prompts for a link to the picture and wouldn't allow the picture to be posted.
Or, maybe, people could be more considerate on their own. |

That was the purpose of inventing the "Link Thumbnail" button up there. Paid members have 10 mb of on-site storage from which they can easily place a thumbnail image in the forums and it acts as a link to the full-sized image. If you were to replace the curly braces {} with square brackets [] in the following code ...
{thumb}38091{/thumb}
You get this:
Non-paid members can also link to thumbnail images from other sites (e.g. pBase.com) but it's a little more complicated -- the the site tutorial on Forum Code for more details on that.

Right. That's why I indicated non-members. I got frustrated with the cat thread. Someone inserted 4 full size pictures in their post. I think it's very inconsiderate on their part. There is an icon for linking for non members, just like the icon for thumbnails in the pop up window. It's the little globe. All one needs to do is copy the url of their image, click the globe, paste their url in the pop up, type a word into the next pop up... and it's magic.
Example
So, I'm pleading for people to use the tools available, and not paste their large images into the forums.
Guess this should have been in the rant forum. Sorry. |

Your frustration is well-founded. The problem was far worse just a few weeks ago before that Thumbnail link was created.
You could always start your own version (thumbs only) of the thread, and cross-link it to the one with the big pictures.
And it's an OK suggestion -- just not sure it's one which can be implemented. One problem is that some 13,000 people have registered here ... obviously most of them are not participating regularly. But that's a lot of megabytes to keep available for them if they should come back. |

A quick Proxomitron rule can be written to convert all in-line images to links that have to be clicked on before the image loads. I wrote such a rule myself for the forums over at DPReview because I was tired of loading all the full-size images... |
