Worst thing ever is:

"I could care less about so and so!"

COULDN'T! If you could care less, then you obviously care a lot already! It's totally against the point of your statement!

*cry*

True...but what if I care about it a little bit? I could care less.

But in the context that you want to make clear how much you really don't care, you wouldn't say that you care a little bit :P

In my experience people who say they don't care do so maybe that phrase does indeed work! :P

Wow, I just came back and saw my thread has reached 5 pages!

Good points by everyone.

My opinion is, if you don't know the difference between loose and lose, then I'm sorry, I will look down on you. And I'm sure that 99% of the time it's not a typo, its bad spelling. Typos are not a big deal, especially in forums.

I'm not talking about people whose English is not their first language, in this case you can tell by reading a line of text, and it's ok and understandable. People without access to primary education are also excluded.

English is not my first language, btw. If I can manage two, surely you can manage one, don't you think?

Thanks, Ben! That's one of my favorite peeves.

Another is that "criterion" is a singular noun and "criteria" is plural.

Also, "anyways" isn't a word.

My curse is that my job is partly editing. Sometimes I deeply wish I could just not notice this stuff!

I was so sad to see some of the flower shops give up and start putting BOKAY on thier signs (I have seen it more than once)

I hate seeing all the "creative" spelling on so many products - hard enough for many people to get it right, without having wrong spelling staring at them in print all over the place.

But Ben, I COULD care less, but why should I bother? ;)

You mean like the industrial park in north NJ that has a business called Nu-Meat? Ew...
03/30/2007 10:41:28 PM · #116
Another frequently misused word: whoop**, as in 'whoop ass'. The correct terminology is 'whup ass'*! How would you do that (whoop ass)? Maybe put your whooping organ (mouth) down close to the ass in question? Not a pretty picture!

*Quaint substitute for the proper "whip", verb, conjugated erroneously as "whip; whap; whup"!

**As in Whooping Crane, War Whoop, Whooping Cough.

Yes, something like that.... just today I looked at a shelf full of cleaning products in a store, and saw "no-streek" and "Kleen" (plus another one that I can't remember now).

Ya know -
It all began years ago with this phrase:
Silly rabbit, trix are for kids!

So does anyone know when the following words diverged from the original spelling?

Grey - Gray
Colour - Color

There are others. I hate it when I do a spell check and it tells me I have spelt it wrong be cause I am an Australian.

One is a color while the other is a colour

Change your spell[ing] check[er] to English (International) or English (UK) and you won't run into that problem :)

International my arse though, we invented it :P

Ignore my last post. I fell asleep with my hand on the update button and completely missed the point.
By the way - what is a "spelt"
