Now I have heard that the D200 has fairly poor battery life... but coming from the D50 I'm appalled! I've just fired 15 frames and the battery says 85%... is that normal? Must I buy the battery grip?

Dylan.

Unfortunately, it is normal for D200. I had to buy myself the battery grip and two extra batteries.

At least your battery speaks to you, mine doesn't utter a word! ;-)

I've done the same thing. Seems that 2 batteries last as long as one on my old D70.

try turning off the LCD.
saves you mucho.

The battery life indicator is also much more accurate, whereas with older nikons it says half battery when it seems more actually close to dead, the d200 is actually closer to half.

It is shorter, but I don't think it's too bad ..and it's really not bad if you turn off the LCD and don't chimp.

So by getting the grip and a couple of batteries, how many shots am I looking at? Also, it uses AA LH6's with the adapter, is this purely as a backup or can it take a few shots as well?

I totally agree. Resist the urge to chimp. I've gotten 1400 pictures off a single battery.

I'm sure there's a meaning behind the word 'chimp' but for the life of me I can't figure it out...

Just shoot. Don't stop to look at every picture on the LCD after you take it. Turn the LCD off and only check it when you need to.

I think it's something to do with looking at the review on the screen while jumping up and down agitatedly going "Oooh, oooh".

The D200 eats batteries. It's the one and only bad trait it seems to hold on to.

I agree with others turn the image preview off, and hit the play button when you need to the composition, histogram, etc. I got 1700+ shots out of one battery last weekend.

the battery life was one thing that almost turned me away from the D200. when i start travelling again, i don't want to carry 5 or 6 batteries with me ... i'll end up getting a battery pack so i can use double As when i'm in the bush.

i turn the preview off and it does help. also turning VR off when you can get away with it too.

The VR does suck up some battery, and I often chimp but don't have the preview automatically on, and I'm seeming to get about 800 shots regularly from a full charge. I've gotten well over 1000 when the VR is turned off.
