I saw this sign and was furious. I would love to know the legality of it. Doesn't the City of Toronto own parts of this area? What about the walkway/benches by the water, are they public areas? How can we find out? This sign really offends me!!

The sign says no photography on the lot, so I assume it's a privately owned parking lot? I would say you could still take photos outside the lot where there are walking trails and benches but that is just my guess.

Yes it is a privately owned parking lot, I can understand that, but there are walkways around it with benches, and I'm wondering if that's privately owned as well. |

Polson Pier is private property. Like any entertainment-oriented business, they just want to cover their bases. It's somewhat analogous to night clubs not letting you take photographs of their venue without permission. Being private property, they can basically make any restrictions they like. I don't have a problem with it. There's tons of great places on the waterfront to take photos at. |

I'd imagine since you're saying it's one of the best views in town that they've had problems with people setting up in their lot. It sounds like the lot is right on the edge so it's probably an ideal spot for professional photographers to try and get portrait shots using the fantastic view as a backdrop. I also know that Toronto is big for the film industry. There's tons of amature film makers there that want that backdrop to their perfect dramatic scene.
I would bet as long as you're not setting up shop in their lot you're fine. What's probably happened in the past is that people set up and that interfers with their business since you can't park a car in a spot that's got 5 people standing in it with light and camera gear. |

It reminds me of one time when I was photophraphing buildings downtown, and as I was photographing one along queens quay, a voice came over the loud speakers asking me to stop, and that if i didnt, the police would be called :)
About Polson Pier, I suppose that because it tries to attract corporate events and weddings it would want to keep their property clear of dozens of photographers that are unrelated to the event. Because it has such nice views they would probably get a lot of photographers that are interested in their area, so the sign is understandable, yet unfortunate. |

Yeah I saw the sign as well... ;P
I was there later at night and was surprised by the number of cars that pulled up with people wanting to take a pic, so I can only imagine what it's like during the day time. Pretty disruptive for business I'm sure. :)

Complain to Tourism Toronto ;) seem to be a major partner
(although i can understand if they were mobbed by massive groups of drop ins for wedding pics & the like .. don't think it should be an issue for a solitary photographer IMO)
has anybody asked for permission ? |

Photographers don't "ask." We're rebels. There's no thrill in asking! |

Can you share some with us? Polson Pier is the only one I know with such a great view of the Toronto skyline. I'd love to try other spots. |

Toronto Island is a great place to take photos. Also, on the beaches near palace pier, at the foot of the Humber River. |

What about the Skywalk as you exit the Cinesphere on the lake? That's a stunning panorama of the city, especially at night. Also, there's a small derelict pier on Ward's Island that offers an interesting (if not spectacular) view of the city. There's the area of Hanlan's point on the island as well. And, you could always rent a boat in summer and take pictures for hours wherever you like. |

The docks charges a photo fee of $10 I believe but its easier to just do it without asking unless your using it for a wedding or other photo shoot. The skyline shot was recently used in a marketing add but I can't remember what the product was. |
