Use system restore and roll it back to a date before you installed the cell phone software. If the cell software is the culprit, uninstalling it probably will not fix the issue.

Upgrading the driver for the card reader may help. You'll need to go to the manufacturer's website to get the latest driver from them. The one on the CD is usually out of date at the moment you buy the reader (depending on how long it was on the shelf).

If the devices have a yellow exclamation mark next to them, select them and press delete. Now plug them in again.

My D50 does this all the time

Also, it may not be the driver for the card reader that's causing the problem. It may be a driver for one of your other USB devices. Upgrading all the USB drivers usually solves the problem.

Try Treesize. It's meant to help you search for space on your hard-drive, but the advantage of it is that it can see things on your computer that you can't see when you are logged in as yourself. I recently used it to locate junk files on my hard drive from a virus that were buried and I couldn't see them with Windows Explorer.

Did your computer come with a motherboard CD? Often there are device drivers on it for the motherboard like the USB host controller, USB Root hub and system devices that write to the BIOS.
Just a thought..

You may (or may not) have done one of the common boo-boo's when it comes to a lot of USB devices. Most you can plug in and use right away or install the drivers and then use them. Many however, you have to install the drivers FIRST then plug them in. I would remove the devices from your device manager (and unplug them) then reboot your system. Then you can install the drivers. You may want to reboot but in any event, you may be able to use the device now.

Eta: Oops...misread original post. This may work any ways actually.

a card reader should not need any drivers at all
your computer's USB port works fine, since it detects your camera easily.
i think your hardware profile may be corrupt/confused. try resetting that.

All devices connected to your computer need a driver. It just happens that Windows XP has some preinstalled drivers that work with most devices. You shouldn't have to install the driver that came with your device unless it's newer than the one used by windows.

I'm really glad I got some responses. But...

- System Restore did not work...(I forgot to mention I tried that one)
- The Driver for the Reader is supposed to be in WinXP Service Pack 2. I checked for updates, rebooted and all and nothing...
- No 'Yellow Exclamations' next to anything...
- I tried upgrading EVER driver. Roll-back, reinstall, delete & reinstall combinations didn't work...

- I actually went and bought a different brand of Reader...but no

I did manage to get somewhere I guess. I've been able to get the light on the reader to come on (so it has power) but when I put a CF card in, it just sits there looking at me like I'm stupid! Well...? Maybe it is me!?!?!?! I found some 'repair/scan' type programs...they all say everything is fine and working. It's like it's there but nobody is home. Some how it lost the path somewhere. That's why I think it might be the cell-phone (funny, we have a challenge coming up involving cell phones...I wonder?) software I installed. I'm really tempted to uninstall it but I thought I'd bump this thread one more time before I do it.

Anybody...anyone...please. If I can't get it fixed I'm gonna have to download the files to my laptop, burn them to CD and then copy them to my PC. That's a big waste of CD's and time. PLEASE HELP ME SOME MORE...!!! PLEASE.......momma! };>)

When exploring (using Windows Explorer) does the CF card show up as a removable disk? It could just be that the autodetect thingy isn't functioning or you've previously set it to 'no action'.

Just a thought. Did you check your computer's Setup/BIOS ROM program? It's probably worth a look, even though nothing SHOULD have changed.
