David,

Welcome to the site... You have made some nice comments in this post and I'm looking forward to seeing your posts in the future... I think your statement quoted below sums things up fairly well. This is the first challenge we have seen that allows total subjective creativity by the photographer. I am expecting to see a LOT of great photos next Monday. I, myself, am scrambling to try to do everything I want to do before I decide which photo gets submitted. I stared on Monday and already have three possible submissions. I hope to have 8 or 10 possibilities before the submission deadline.

Since the summertime days are longer, I hope to get some work done during the week now and not leave it all for the weekend like I have in the past.

Good luck with your submissions here :)

Thus, in my view, the challenge this week is: create a black and white image that is visually arresting with sufficent intrigue to motivate a high evaluation by most viewers.

PS I'm new to this challenge site and looking forward to the experience.

one person's creativity is dressing their kid up in an unusual outfit.

another's is covering religious icons in fake blood.

still another's is shining a colored light on a flower.

still another's is some form of abstraction.

the point? who defines what is "creative enough"? and who are you trying to appease in your efforts?

i see the challenge of the challenges as being creative while still fitting within the constraints of the 'assignment'. that takes some skill, and some have developed those skills more than others.

it's the oldest rationalization in the world to blame others for not 'getting' one's work. imho, though, in some cases, that's like being given an assignment to write about the causes of world war II, but one writes a poem about underwear, and then gets mad at the reaction.

finally, i should say that i like creativity and attempts thereof, and if people are at least trying to be creative, and push themselves in that department, then that's alright with me : ) ...

Yes, subjective creativity will abound in this next challenge. I got what I think is my best photo ever this morning and it was quite by accident. The lighting was perfect (I think) and the focus was just right. I hope it goes over well. Even so, for the type of photography I love, I am proud of the result.
