Mine's 9, too. I keep trying to convince her to enter some of her pics. No success so far.

to amason,
first off, i never accused a 9 year old of cheating. To be honest, if it was an illegal entry which it is not, the cheating wouldn't be on the 9 year olds part, but probably someone assisting her w/ processing.
second, is it so far fetched that someone would put a composite image into a challenge? People have been kicked off for cheating before and will continue to in the future.
third, I asked a question. if i was going to accuse, I would have said, "This is a composite of two images and should be DQ'd" and i would have reported it to SC.
Lastly, don't make me seem like Im out to get a 9 yr old. that image could have been made from 2. I never said it was but its possible. That background could provide many great composite images. If i asked about a possible composite that was taken by an adult, no one would have cared, I would have gotten an answer and that would be it.

Jmnuggy,
Sorry man but I cannot and I dont think anybody agrees with you raising a flag and blowing the whistle on a 9 year old. Its like asking a 9 year old for her birth cirtificate on her birthday!! Yes you have the right, but it is absolutely NOT right! |

Why should the fact that she's 9 play any importance in whether she followed the rules or not? It's totally irrelivent how old someone is. We encourage people to request validation on photos they think may be suspect. In the case of the top 5 in a challenge, SC automatically request proof, but if anyone questions any other photo (no matter what the age of the photographer) please bring it to our attention so we can investigate further.
I think its very unfair for people to have a go at Jmnuggy like this. |

Your position to encourage people to question is completely understandable since this is a "challenge" site. But when mutual trust is taken away, esp from a 9 year old, to some it strips away the friendly communal feel of the site. The challenge to me is against myself and improving my skills (if any) through others perspective and helpful critisism. The MY vs YOURS attitude in my humble thought is hardly constructive.
In this case this debate should not have unfolded since as you say the top 5 are always requested to validate.
Apologese if anyone esp Jmnuggy is offended by my thoughts here, but opinions are like you know what, and everyones got one :p In this case I hope that most are.... :D

As Konador has previously stated, the age of the entrant is irrelevant when it comes to validation.
To some, when someone wins ribbons by violating the rules it also "strips away the friendly communal feel of the site." Can we give Jnmuggy a break here?
The photo has been validated - it's wonderful that someone so young shows so much promise and talent, and it sure will be fun to see what she comes up with next! :)

Ok. I'll rise to the bait.
I'm stand by Jmnuggy on this one, and I'll tell you why.
First, his comments aren't making an accusation of outright cheating. He asked a question. Was there an alterior motive - maybe yes, maybe no. Did he know the photographer was 9 years old - maybe yes, maybe no. Is the age of the photographer relative - no.
To make statements saying that Justin made "accusations" is an accusation in itself. Jumping to conclusions, and all of that. Sounds a bit like the pot calling the kettle black IMO.
Compositions are not unusual at DPC, and they not always outside the challenge rules.

Nor is everything as it always appears. The eyes can play tricks on people. To my embarrassment, I thought the following image was of some high-tech/secure conference room with a cool table lined with monitors. It's a train station.

Personally, I don't know Justin. I'm familiar with his username as he's active around here. Do you, those that are quick to grab the flamethrower, know Justin? If yes, and you know him well enough to read between the lines of his comments accurately, by all means make your statements with conviction. If not, perhaps take another look before scorcing the 'Post' button.
All JMO of course. |

Let's not get crazy here...Levyj413 is just asking what we all ask if we see something strange to our eye. Just because the photographer is young doesn't mean we can't try to poke holes in her success !

Oh, come on. The other side of that lagoon might be a mile away. You could easily move a good distance in either direction and it'd look the same.
Remember that the top 5 shots in every challenge are validated. Rely on the SC and worry about your own photography. |

This thread started out on a wonderful note and I would like to keep that ongoing! Congratulations Arna Rós for a great photograph of a beautiful and exceptional place in Iceland that we are all so proud of. The Geothermal Station at Blue Lagoon sends out a steady stream of steam 24 hours a day, in cold weather it is white and so beautiful against the blue sky a very clean engergy generated there.
The Icelanders on this site are also very proud of Arna Rós, she will have to learn English quickly to put all the doubters in their place, it´s a shame to cast a shadow on this exceptional win!
Thanks to Arna´s mom and dad for giving her the camera and being so supportive of her, parents who can nurture their kids with a healthy hobby such as photography should be praised. |

My congrats to young photographer ArnaRos on the ribbon. I think this discussion has been a bit naive! :)
I too won my first ribbon this week and must admit that having a 9 year old taking a ribbon in the same week did somewhat lessen my feeling of accomplishment. 8-)
Her father has without a doubt encouraged her and given her some guidance, but it's still not cheating. Too bad my daughter is only 4 :) In the right light the Blue Lagoon looks out of this world, just like ArnaRos's image.

Congratulations Arna Rós!
I think that Jmnuggy had the right to ask his question and now that we have had all the answers we all know that this ribbon winner is worthy of it all.
Hope to see more pictures from you in the near future.
Til hamingju Arna Rós!
Ég held að Jmnuggy hafi alveg haft rétt á þvàað spyrja þessarar spurningar og núna þegar við höfum fengið svörun vitum við að þessi vinningshafi er vel þess verður.
Vonandi mun ég fá að sjá fleiri myndir frá þér á næstunni.

Get real, please.
My granddaughter is 6 years old and since I got my D200 she is free to use the D70. No she can't take it home with her as I only have the two lenses and can't be without either, but she shoots with the D70 and some of it is pretty cool. Kids today really love being able to see right away what they have created and they love having their picture taken and then they all say "can I see please" and I turn the camera around for them to look.
I agree with Xilebo, this discussion started in a nice way, please go back to that same place.
Take 5 please!!! Think how this discussion feels for the 9 year old. I don't think she understands much English, but I am pretty sure that if she surfs DPC from time to time she can see that there is a thread discussing her shot. And then she will ask her parents to tell her what they are saying. Her parents gave her the camera for Christmas (says so on her profile) and I think we can safely surmise that they support her on her journey into photography in any way they can, apart from doing the shooting. Translating would be one of the jobs they help her with: the camera manual is probably not in Icelandic, Photoshop is not in Icelandic and submission rules on DPC are not in Icelandic. All of these things are important for her. She can't just figure that a shot must be 640 pixels or less before she submits, must be less than 150 kb in size, and then filling out the other info would be hard for a person that does not speak English. They are translating all this for her and when she asks what people are discussing there, mentioning her name, posting copies of her shot etc. Should they lie???
The Blue Lagoon is one of the most fascinating places on the planet. No, I am not saying that because I am Icelandic, I am saying it because first of all I have visited almost 30 countries and seen many lovely places and the Blue Lagoon is just something else. I have worked as a guide and tourists that arrive at the Blue Lagoon are more or less speechless. One of my best friends, a lady from Missouri, has really travelled the world, I mean really travelled all over. When I took her to the Blue Lagoon on a cold November evening, she said that this was one of the most thrilling places she had ever been to, she still mentions the place.
When we were in the water, chilling out in the hot water, we had a surreal experience. All of a sudden a little rowboat came out of the fog (steam fog). In the boat there was a young woman, a French figure skater called Surya Bonaly, a World Champion, maybe even an Olympic Gold Medalist too, I can't remember. There she was, with her skates on and in a figure skating costume, in a boat, in the Blue Lagoon. I can't begin to tell you how long it took me to get myself together and close my mouth. All became clear when another boat appeared and in that one there was a photographer. They took a plane to Iceland to do a shoot in the Blue Lagoon. Does that tell you anything about the wonders of that place?
Annie Leibowitz was in Iceland shooting just a few days ago.
Dear people of the DPC. You all know what can be done if you are in Iceland with a camera. And if you are a good photographer and know the basics of that fabulous software called Photoshop, or any other, there are ribbons to fetch at the other end of the journey.
The DPC journey on the other hand has proven to be a bumpy ride for many people. Be gentle with this 9 year old that obviously has talent and does in no way deserve this discussion. Key words here are <9 years old>. The nuances of discussions on DPC can be difficult for grown-ups, let alone for children. Make her journey a pleasant one, I beg you.
I don't know her, and to the best of my knowledge, I don't know her parents. So I am not biases in any way. But I do know a little bit about children and this is not something they should be confronted with.
If you really need to have this discussion, take it elsewhere.
Edit. To clarify.

I'm so impressed with her talent and ability to use her camera, she will have a bright future ahead of her in photography and art as well. Mom and Dad did a good thing buying her a camera. Kudos to Dad for taking the time to teach her. |

Congratulations Arna Rós and I love to see more pictures from you in the future!
I do agree with Xilebo; let’s keep this thread on the positive notes. Anna Rós is a very young talent and positive criticism will only encourages her to do even better in the future.
And for you who want to take a virtual tour around the Blue Lagoon and see it with your own eyes please follow this link.

I'm sure she had some help from a 35 year old, the father.
I hope he continues in teaching her all he knows, as long as he doesn't do her homework, which would not be really helping.
I'm sure that very quickly he may even learn something from a child's point of view of the world. Children many times amaze their parents.
I look forward to seeing more of her photos. |
