Day 1:
No editing aside from resize to upload. Liked the JPEG much better than RAW (shot w/ both). In-camera underexpose by one stop, white balance to "open shade" to warm image. |

I had not decided whether to do this or not, and I may not complete it, but I am going to give it a try. I will post my minimal editing shot here, and my edited version in my Photo a Day blog.

Day 2 - The infamous Pinewood Derby of Pack 33....
This is not very DPC friendly, but I figured I would use them because this is what I have been doing all morning.
Resized and saved. No editing.

Then by using the post image link above the "Post Reply" box you can put them into the thread. There are others here who can give you better help with this, or you can read how to do it in the tutorials threads.
Good to have you along for the trip with this challenge. I am sure you will catch on quickly about posting pics.
Cool image that you posted. I don't think we are allowed to crop for this side challenge. : ) |
Kari doesn't have a blue shirt (she's a registered, not paid, member), so that means no portfolio. Any way we can let non-paids get comments? I think commenting in the thread will get way too busy. Anybody have any thoughts? I'd prefer this be inclusionary rather than exclusionary.

I would love to join in this. But I can understand if I should just back out? |

You could always set up a blog at blogger.com, it's free and we could comment on your photos there.

Glad you stayed in, Kari, and glad that Karen and Johnna got you on the road to blogger!
Here is my Day 2
Details on the page, and as you'll see, I don't like it (but that was kind of the point for me today).

How I understand the minimal editing rules, we can sharpen with a customizable sharpening tool - not USM. I've tried it on a few and it works ok. |
NON-customizable sharpening tool - ie your only choice/setting is to apply or not. In Photoshop, that tool is "Sharpen". You can't set anything, like strength or radius or the like. Keep in mind this rule is for the minimal editing CHALLENGE rule set. I don't think it's a big deal for this project, but the point is to learn to try to get what you want from your camera to start with. Understand that DSLRs don't sharpen unless you tell it to shoot jpeg with some sharpening applied in camera. |
Whoops! Yes - what Melethia said. :o) |

DAY 3 .. 11th march .. unedited
ok ... the kangaroo photograph is pretty ordinary but i liked that i actually caught them on film ... i also got a couple of shots of kangaroos two days ago for the first time, so it looks like i'll get that totally awesome kangaroo shot tomorrow!!! ... (like my best shot it always the next one!! .. and things always come in threes !!!...)
anyway, i've put the kangaroos in here coz i see possiblities .. i've put a fence shot in too, coz i like it better as a photograph, so that's two for today ... if there's a problem with that please let me know ...
both the kangaroos and the fence have a sharpened version you can see in the photographer's comments of each image ... sharpening makes an amazing difference to a photograph ...

Heres day 2. This is Zeus sitting by the patio door in my office. I swear, he runs when I break out the camera.

Day 3 - Unedited
I took this with my father's nikkor 105mm prime. What a great lens - the sharpness on the unreduced image is insane - plus the background is so silky. This is now in my bag for good. |
