Releasing your inner child in public again, eh, Irae? Don't you remember what the police told you the last time?

But seriously, my wife, who is also a non-serious photographer, has really had her imagination caught by this site as well, and submitted to upside down and has received a large # of comments. her photos is doing much better than mine, too, lol!

yesterday i helped her take a picture for games.

I think that part of the draw is the weekly format. It's long enough to do something decent but not so long that you lose interest (hmm, another thing to tie into the discussion about the mcdonaldization of our culture? oh well, i'll just let that one go .. : P ) ...

tHAT'S a good idea, peep : ) ..

except that i'd amend it to maybe be 13 year old instead of 7. it would be tough to explain exposure terminology to a 7.

"ok, now open your camera's hole til it's reaaaalllly big. there you go. that makes the fuzzy wuzzy part of the picture bigger so that you can see mr. binky more clearly! there we go, who wants some ice cream????"

: )

You make a good point, BAMartin. Woudn't it be great if everyone tried to write their comments as if they were writing to a seven-year-old? The comments would probably be clear, respectful (but honest) and hopefully somewhat encouraging. I know MOST of us are not seven, but do we deserve any less? It will be interesting to see her work, and the comments she gets. Good luck! :)

I haven't signed up my 5 year old son yet, although I've sent some of his shots to JonesSoda (see below). I'm glad to see others have had the same idea --but I wonder how folks feel about parental assistance, e.g. cropping, contrast, uploading, etc. Since he's just starting to read, I usually handle some of those tasks, although he's been using computers since he was 2.

I like the idea of the kids' photos being judged anonymously with the group -- we will probably be surprised at some point!

Here are four of his photos at JonesSoda. He also took my profile photo. Your comments are welcome.

I can't wait to see what she came up with!

Since I've lost my fast connection I've stopped voting and leaving comments. I have found it frustratingly slow to vote on a 56K line.

I used to try and leave constructive comments on all the photos.

But like I said, until I get back my fast connection (I'm in the process of moving to another state) it's just too difficult to vote on a dial up, even with all the efforts of the admins to make the site fast :-( Waiting for each image to draw just takes too much time.

Mikey --

Hopefully we'll be adding some more features in the near future that you might like to tide you over. ... And hopefully you can always benefit from the forums and other site features, however small they are presently. :)

Actually doing ANYTHING on the internet at 56k, after you have felt the speed of DSL or Broadband, sucks.

Thanks, and despite not being able to vote effectively, I still do enjoy reading the DPChallenge forums on a daily basis!

I'm not upset.

I know it is hard for some to comment on every photo, but if someone does take the time, could that person please leave something other than "No comment".

Just a question.

As one who usually takes "middle of the pack" photos, here's my observation. If you take a bad photo you will get lots of comments. If you take a really good photo you will get lots of comments. If you are somewhere in the middle you won't get many. It's kind of a reverse bell curve... I know that when I'm commenting I try to alternate my comments between what I consider to be the top and bottom photos. Then by the end of the week I feel bad and try to comment on some of the middle of the pack...

Not getting enough of comments is not the issue here.
If someone feels strongly enough, whether negatively or positively, about a photo to leave a comment, I feel it should be something other than "No Comment", is all.
I have had photos with many many comments, and photos with hardly any. But I have never rec'd a "no comment" comment.
Hate it? Fine. Love it? Fine. Middle of the road on it? Fine. ... but to take the time to write "no comment"? Please.

I got one too and I agree - folks that take themselves too seriously and do the "no comment" thing are engaging in passive aggression in aarea where honest, earnest creators have done a brave thing - offer their work after 1 week's thought/effort for criticism by others. In this unique forum the no comment thing is worse, however - it is an indiscriminate, "blind to recipient" type of aggression and at best it distracts the sensibilities of innocent persons who are have contributed something of themselves. Whoever you are you should be ashamed - or of course, there is also the possibility that none of this applies and you is just ... oblivious - lol!

Thanks, Beth... although I am not really taking it personally, although it may sound that way. It is merely a comment on a comment.
;)

Its not apparant to me how I can see voter comments before the voting is closed. How can I access the comments?

Time for me is always a factor, so I made a decision this week that moving forward I will comment on every picture I give a score to. This will probably mean that I will never ever again vote on every picture in a challenge but since people always say comments are far more important, I think it's a good idea. I'm also not picking what pictures I vote on, I'm letting it be totally random. In my comments I'm trying to say something positive, as well as something constructive. Not easy in every case, but there's always something that could be improved, attempted or experimented further with. I'm trying not to be fluffy, but also not too judgmental.

Nothing personal but I completely disagree. It's this kind of mentality that keeps some photos from a chance at greatness. Sure, the people that get comments are ok, but what about the other shots you didn't even bother to vote on.. I think all photos deserve the same respect,, amateur, pro, or genius. I'd accept never getting another comment if that effort was put towards viewing and judging ALL photos with the same respect and courtesy. If you can't be fair, don't vote.

edit: on a side note (has nothing to do with forementioned comment or my rebuttle). It really boils my blood when people can't accept something different from their own or make judgements based on 'what they would have done'.. Ok, so tell me what you would have done cuz I enjoy the lessons and new outlooks, but don't vote us low because it isn't exactly what or how you would have done it.

But I guess that's why I'm the rebel rouser (no, not the camera)

No offense taken, different opinions are always educational. I actually used to agree with your point, I always thought voting was far more important then commenting. I mean really, what the heck do I know about photography that would give any deep value to my comments.

However after constantly reading forum posts where people are so defeated because they have a lot of votes but absolutely no insight into the voters perspective. I began to appreciate the fact that words have a far more positive power then votes.

My simplified analogy is: if you are teaching a child life lessons you don't just say to them good, bad, very bad, without ever given them the logic behind your comments. Otherwise it would take far longer for a child to put two and two together and realize which behaviors dictate which reactions.

Ideally I could score and comment on every photo, but I̢۪d be lying if I said I thought I could do it each and every challenge. So I have to compromise and go with what I think is a better way to participate and give back to the community. In this case I̢۪m working towards the theory that commenting is for the greater good of the overall community and I am less concerned with elevating singular photos to greatness.

I think saying that I am not respecting all the photos and being unfair is a little harsh, but as mentioned above no offense taken as everyone is entitled to their opinion.

I'm quite curious about why a thread from 2002 was resurrected when the first new post didn't seem to refer specifically to what had been written above?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining at ALL... just struck me as kind of strange.

:o)
