I know, I know, I'm not in Phoenix :P

But:

that is HOT! 36 C, that's the highest we have on a year, normally.. :S

Gordon, what's on the 15th of April?

I'm somewhat used to the heat, it gets up to 110F (43C) on occasion here in Austin, but it is still in the mid 70s to low 80s just now. I'm doing a race in Phoenix and it'll be outdoors, so it would be a bit of a shock if it gets over 100F on that day.

Hey ya'll can come up to Flagstaff where the weather is perfectly divine right now!! In the low 70's, bright and sun shiney...a hop, skip & jump to some beautiful sites/scenery to shoot.

And I'M HERE too! *grin*

You are all probably going to want a GTG on a weekend, and I have to work weekends. I may have to miss this one :-(

Hey all, are we looking at the 15th of April or possibly the weekend before? I'm out of town the weekend of the 15th. It's my birthday! (yes, my birthday is on tax day...) :0P
03/15/2007 06:14:00 PM · #31
I'm flexible and can probably do just about any schedule either weekend, since I'm there on vacation. The 8th is Easter, so I assume that will be a bad day, so we're prolly looking at either the 7th, 14th, or 15th. I'd also probably be able to swing a weeknight GTG.

Where 'bouts ... any idea?

One of those Del Webb communities. They are close to Riggs and Gilbert.

Just down the road then. I'm in Ocotillo, which just north of Snowbird Haven, er, I mean Sun Lakes (Del Webb's "city") and maybe 4-5 miles from Riggs and Gilbert.

If it's Laura's birthday the weekend of the 15th, then we need to do it before...
We scheduled a GTG in Phoenix, and couldn't go, so this time I really want to go. How about the 7th? Does that work for everyone? I'd even be open for a weekday, if Laura is.

She's my ride. =/

The 7th is the only day I can do it, so if you want me there, you have your day. ;)

But seriously, feel free to plan a day that works for most people.

Ok guys, let's plan it for the 7th :0)
Wheredya wanna go?!

Toss out some ideas if you like!

DBG has the butterfly exhibit going on
Boyce is a nice little hike (I hesitate to use the word hike here, but a nice long walk at least!)
We could always do the Zoo
or I could set up a tour for Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West

ooo- check it out guys, they have a photo tour!! You guys interested?
photo tour

darnit, looks like that's only the last Sat. of every month- we could still go there tho!

I am up for the zoo - been a while and I've been dying to use my new EF 100-300 at such a location.

But I am flexible :)

Hmmm...
The butterfly exhibit is always fun, like last year. But I could do the zoo, too, if you want. :)
03/24/2007 10:01:08 PM · #38
Being the outsider, I'd vote for something that I can only get down there. Butterflies and zoos can be had anywhere. But don't let me be an influence.

Personally I'd love a picturesque spot and shoot early evening into sunset and maybe even some night stuff. I had a blast by myself at Lost Dutchman State park.

Whatever we do, let's get it planned. I leave in a week. :)

The Botanical Garden is gorgeous this time of year. And there are five mountain ranges right in the city... Camelback Mountain is amazing; Echo Canyon is on the backside of Camelback and it is breath taking. Papago Park in Scottsdale is mind-boggling. Squaw Peak Mountain is huge and craggy and you can see for miles over the city and beyond. Wilderness and views abound. So if time is of the essence, there's no need to go out of town.

I love DrAchoo's idea.

Superstition Mountains

***sorry - couldn't find a better link***

Isn't the botanical garden out that way anyway? Perhaps we could have a double feature for people who really wanted to do some shooting.
03/25/2007 06:38:18 PM · #43
The botanical gardens, Papago park and the zoo are all in the same area at about 56th street and McDowell. The zoo is just a tad further south. The superstitions are about 30-40 minutes east of there.

I like the night shoot idea, I could use some pointers on stuff like that.
But whatever is good for everyone else. :)

sorry I haven't replied, my roof is being replaced and I had to shut down the office after the rain on Thursday started coming in! *sigh* That was so fun.

Anywho- I myself would much rather do a night shoot out in the desert too.
Apache Trail/ Superstition Mountains? We'll need to pick a specific place to meet up too :0)

Here is a good link- the Superstition Mountains are actually in Lost Dutchman Park.
We could meet at the Ranger's Station and catch sunset if you guys like :0)

I would love to do a night shoot in the Superstitions!

My roommate and I just got back from Arizona yesterday. We had a lot of family to visit or I would have tried to get together with some of you - I have yet to meet any other DPC members - one of these days!!!

We did manage to get out and do some shooting though - the Superstitions (Apache Trail) were amazing - we had some great light and shadow play on the mountains and found a few lizards, birds and butterflies. We took a small detour in Goldfield - touristy rendition of a ghost town - on the way into the mountains. They do have a pretty good reptile exhibit there that we really enjoyed. We also stopped at the Wildlife World Zoo in Litchfield Park. Not a large zoo, but the animals are fantastic!

There is so much more that I want to see out there (this being my 2nd trip)...next time I am going to have to plan a longer vacation.

Hope you guys have a great get-to-gether and I look forward to seeing all of your photos!!

Peralta Trailhead in the Supes is a great place for night shooting.

Supertitions and Goldfield and that area are all great photo ops in the Phoenix metro area that I'd recommend to all photographically inclined visitors. Nearby Lost Dutchman State Park and hiking from it are highly recommended. I have taken many images in these places. Among them:

Goldfield

Superstitions:

Superstition flora and spring:

I don't do justice to the place. :(
