Those Ukranian eggs are amazing - I'd love to see what you could do with an emu egg. Those things are about the size of Nerf footballs, range in colour from turquoise to near-black, and are white if you etch the surface. I bet you could do amazing things with one of them puppies! |

Easter is coming up soon. Will the Easter Bunny have enough eggs for all of Team Suck? My basket is ready.
Well, almost ready -- I have to clear away those flowers and trinkets.
Seriously, I have really enjoyed these interviews. They are fun and revealing. Good questions and thoughtful answers. Team Suck rocks! |

And today a trip to the UK and a visit with our favorite proud and dolting father/grandfather, Steve Formerlee.
Q. What got you into photography?
A. I dabbled in photography back in the '70s, then in the mid 80's it became more serious although there was always the matter of cost of processing. Now, with digital, I am relearning and experimenting more.
Q. What could get you out of photography?
A. I get a great detail of satisfaction, plus a record of my grandchildren growing up. Both my younger daughters' weddings are stored on CD. It can be an exciting interest, meeting new people and visiting new places.
Q. Take us through a history of your camera purchases.
A. First camera was a 110 cartridge pocket thingie. Then bought a Praktica SLR, Olympus OM10 & OM40 SLR, Pentax SLR, Canon EOS650. Ricoh 35mm P&S. Fujifilm Finepix DX10 digital P&S, Fujifilm Finepix 6900Z, Canon 300D, Fujifilm Finepix 9500, Canon 30D and a Pentax K100D.
Q. Finish the statement, Life is short...(do what first?)
A. Live for the day like it is your last. Know that anything you want to do can be done with determination and effort.
Q. What is the most ridiculous extent you have gone to for a challenge?
A. I don't think I have ever gone above the safety factor as far as a challenge is concerned. Perhaps that is why I remain where I am in DPC. Maybe, one day I will step out of my comfort zone?
Q. What is your sign and how are the stars conspiring against you?
A. I am a Cancerian so I am governed by the Moon. This explains my moods, highs and lows. I don't think the stars are conspiring against me, just not working in my favour with challenge material.
Q. How has depth of field changed your life?
A. Macro has always been my favourite subject, so depth of field is very important. As stated earlier, I am relearning and it slowly becomes clearer each day.
Q. Which ribbon goes best with your home décor?
A. Brown, I'm afraid. Our colour scheme is very minimalist. I am not the sort of person who likes living with vivid colours in my home.
Q. What activities besides photography help you vent your creative urges?
A. I enjoy writing novels and poems. I have written 13 novels, but never bothered trying to get any published. I used to write a newspaper column. I enjoy being outdoors, walking, visiting ancient sites (luckily the UK has quite a large number of there sites). I enjoy watching motorsports.
Q. Which photographs on dpchallenge are your top 5 favorites (other than your own)?
A. I can't name 5 favourites, but I do have a few favourite photogs on DPC, but really think that there are so many great photos here that it would be unfair to pick out just 5. Was that skipping round the question??
Q. Which photo represents the challenge that was your favorite to do?
A. I'm a Free Study person, when it comes to challenges I tend to produce real c**p shots. For some reason my imagination goes AWOL and the quality of my photos disappears. Trouble is DPC doesn't do enough challenges for me and my favourite topics, unfair of them. And, since it is excuse time, I only get to take the camera out on a weekend.
.
Q. Tell us the story behind one of your photos.
A.
is one I really like, but the voters didn't. One person suggested changing the background?? It's grass, out of focus, but it is that green stuff that grows in your garden.no, not weeds. It was taken with the Sigma 70-300mm APO DG and was one of the first times I used it. The focussing is pretty near spot on as far as I can tell.
Q. What picture on DPC most accurately depicts what your brain is like?
A. 'Shall I take the Lens Cap off??'
Q. What piece of photography equipment are you currently using as a
paperweight?
A. Actually it isn't photographic, it's my Ipod I bought after Xmas. I use an mp3 player at work, but haven't had a chance to use it there yet, so it is gathering dust on top of a load of printed off photos.
Q. If you could do a photo session with anyone from history, who would it be? Describe the shots you would take.
A. I would have to choose a musician. My hero is Jim Morrison - no, it is John Lennon. Either would be great. I work at John Lennon's house where he lived and filmed 'Imagine', I would love to get him posed as The Walrus! Or Jim Morrison in that famous pose from the Best of The Doors CD.
Q. What is your philosophy on post editing, minimalist, no rules, or
something in between?
A. I am useless at PS and post editing. I like minimalist, but if every challenge was this, then I would soon get bored. I like some rules to follow and also like the new editing challenges - to look at! I think we should have a few more open challenges with basic editing, cos a lot of people are frightened of or do not have PS or similar.
Q. Do you take pictures because you can't write poetry? Be honest.
A. I write poetry, when the urge takes me.
Q. Camera equipment lust??? Name your desire.
A. A Pentax K10D. A good high end zoom, or a really good Macro lens with ring flash.
Q. How do you decide which challenges to enter?
A. I just hope a good idea hits me in time for me to go out and shoot. I don't like studio setups cos I haven't the room to make a good studio, or the lights or a model or an understanding wife who is quite happy to have 20 year old nude models wandering around, or me being alone with one!!
Q. If the Suck League comes and camps out in your yard, you're not going to call the police are you?
A. No, of course not! It would be the local insane asylum!!
Q. What advice would you give someone new to photography?
A. Don't get to serious. Have loads of fun with your camera. Try everything.

And a trip to South Jersey for a breakfast chat with Kelli.
What got you into photography?I started with a 110 film camera when I was about 8 years old. My grandfather bought it for me. I drove my mother nuts with getting them developed. I think I shot about 5 rolls a week. Did you ever see the movie Lilo & Stitch? The little girl, Lilo, had bizarre pictures that she took plastered all over her room, that was me. Unfortunately, I lost all those photos in a house fire. I moved up to 35mm at about 15. I went digital about 3 months before I joined DPC in 2003.
What could get you out of photography?
Believe it or not DPC almost got me out of photography. Then I found a wonderful group of people there to call friends. Thank you TS for saving my sanity. "Post response: You're sure we don't support and encourage insanity?"
Are you collecting frequent flier miles from the Philadelphia zoo? What is your favorite zoo photo?LOL! I'm a "deluxe" member at the zoo. This includes entry for my immediate family and two guests every time I visit, along with free parking and one free ride per person on the each of the attractions that you would normally pay for (such as camel rides and the air balloon). I've been a member for over 18 years. The proceeds from membership do a lot for the animals and over the years I've gotten some beautiful shots from the zoo.
My favorite zoo shot that I have on DPC is a toss up between
and .
Are there really cherry trees in Cherry Hill, NJ? Any photos to prove this?
Beautiful non-fruiting cherry trees line Chapel Avenue, a major two lane road in Cherry Hill. Though to be honest, it's such a main public street with no place to pull over, so I've never taken pictures there. I promise to get some this spring when they bloom though!
What is the most ridiculous extent you have gone to for a challenge? That would have to be the "Ice" challenge, where I climbed down a 6 foot retainer wall to get a close up of the sheets of ice piled up along the Delaware River.
What is your sign and how are the stars conspiring against you?I'm a Gemini! And I really do seem to have duel personalities. So even when the stars are lined up for one side of my personality, they seemed to be lined up against the other side. Therefore, I've come to the conclusion that life just isn't winnable, LOL. ;)
How has depth of field changed your life? It's made me realize I might need glasses!
Which ribbon goes best with your home décor? The brown for my living room, the yellow for my bedroom and the blue for my bathroom. No matter how I look at it, I can't seem to fit the red in anywhere.
What activities besides photography help you vent your creative urges?
Baking and cake decorating are where my other creative outlets go. I've done everything from simple birthday cakes to sculpted cakes in fondant to wedding cakes for friends and relatives.
Which photographs on dpchallenge are your top 5 favorites (other than your own)?
by xianart
by lynnesite
by cheegirl
by mk
by cutter
Which photo represents the challenge that was your favorite to do?
I had a blast in the reptile house searching for patterns that day.
Tell us the story behind one of your photos.
My husband hates the beach at the ocean. My son loves to swim at the beach. We discovered this great beach in a town called Fortesque, NJ. They actually have bumper stickers that say "Where the hell is Fortesque anyway?" because it is so hard to find. It's on the Delaware Bay and you can fish and swim from the same beach. After swimming all day, my son was totally absorbed in making tunnels in the sand, it just seemed such a perfect moment in time. "Post reply: you realize a good part of Philadelphia is about to discover Fortesque?"
What picture on DPC most accurately depicts what your brain is like?
Go ahead and analyze that~!
If you could send one picture from this site to President Bush, which would it be?
What piece of photography equipment are you currently using as a paperweight? My folded up light tent.
If you could do a photo session with anyone from history, who would it be? Describe the shots you would take.Alfred Hitchcock. I don't actually want to take photos of him, I'd prefer he mentor me on the bizarre camera angles to invoke the physical reactions I get when I watch his movies, especially Vertigo.
What is your philosophy on post editing, minimalist, no rules, or something in between?I prefer something in between, probably because I'm not really that good with Photoshop (despite my dummies book). Though I really like to play with the filters. I think all filters should be allowed in advanced editing.
Do you take pictures because you can't sit still? Be honest. Actually I take pictures because I can sit still! I can sit and watch the animals for hours on end waiting for a good picture. Of course I have to go to the zoo alone when I do that because my son won't stay in one place longer than 5 minutes.
Camera equipment lust??? Name your desire.
Canon EOS-5D with the biggest (longest) zoom lens available.
How do you decide which challenges to enter?
If they are too technical, I usually tend opt out now unless it's something I really understand. I'm sure I can get into the upcoming Grain challenge since I frequently have comments about my grain/noise. I do tend to get tired of the DNMC people. I look for something open to interpretation, hopefully in a big way. It helps to like the subject.
If DrAchoo and Larus were thrown into a sack containing only a tripod, an alien bee and an 8000mm lens, who would come out alive?
In my version of the world, the Alien Bee would come to life. Larus and DrAchoo would come out of the sack with their butts crazy glued to a sunflower at which point the Alien Bee would fly them to Iceland and take pictures of them with the 8000mm lens under the aurora borealis.
What advice would you give someone new to dpchallenge?Don't take your scores too seriously. Even the "real" masters that were thrown into the mix didn't score to well.

Thanks Steve and Kelli! Nice to get to know a bit more about you. And Kelli - very cool that you've had a zoo membership for 18 years! I need to see how much one costs at the Frankfurt zoo. It's not exactly close but it's not really all that far either. |
