I drive myself crazy resizing and saving my photos to get them the right size for the challenges. I end up making them smaller than necessary, but can't quite figure out how to do this simply and effectively.

Is there a thread to tell me how to do this?

HELP! Please? Thanks.

Thank you, and thank you also to the PMs I got with this link. Problem is... I don't have Photoshop. I need more memory to run it, so I think there's a new computer in my immediate future.

But in the meantime, if you have suggestions....

What computer do you have? That might help narrow the suggestions.

If people knew what software you did use, it increases the chance that someone could reply knowledgeably...

What program are you using to resize?

No matter the software you're using, you should be able to use *most* of the information in the tutorial. The key is to make sure that your longest dimension is 640px. Then use your software's "save as" dialog (they all have one) and set the quality to whatever is necessary to be within the size limit. Some software will show you what the size will be before saving some will not (which means trial and error). Remember that if the software shows 149k, for instance, the file may come out slightly larger due to the "overhead" of the file header, so it might be necessary to reduce quality a little further.
For most images, a quality level of 7 or 8 is quite possible, but some shots with very high detail or lots of grain/noise may require lower quality settings. In some extreme cases, it might be worth trying some subtle noise reduction. That can reduce the file size, while maintaining higher quality.

Sorry about not saying - it feels a little embarrassing, I guess. I use just very basic saving and editing. I have AMD Duron processor with XP, and only 256MB of RAM. I use MS Office Picture Manager. Occassionally, I can muster enough memory to drive MS Image Composer, which I have installed, but usually can only use the simplest functions. Don't have much - don't use much.
I think you're right - I can use a lot of the tutorial info - I was trying to avoid the trial and error part. My software does not show me the size until I save, so in the tree challenge it took me about an hour to resize, and then the pic seemed too small, anyway. The minimal editing rules said "resize your entry once", and I was afraid to save to see the size, and then make it smaller again - I was working in the dark, so to speak.
