What speed and type flash should I get for my Canon Rebel 300D? what would be the ideal flash for this camera? Thanks for your help! |

The Canon 420ex or the 550ex would be good choices.

I looked at both, for my D10. I went for the 420ex for two main reasons:
1) Price
2) The 550ex is really bulky
Price I could not get around, bulk I could have lived with. If money is not a problem then the 550ex would certainly be the better one. Also, the 420 can acy as a radio controlled slave, but not as a master. The 550 can be the master., and that might appeal to some.

One issue is that the 300D doesn't have flash exposure compensation, and the 420EX doesn't have manual control. This will result in a severe lack of control for flash exposure if you want more than just a powerful flash for snapshots. Good flash combinations are either the 300D with the 550EX (as the 550EX has manual settings) or the 10D with either. I'm happy with the 420EX, but then I can dial in flash exposure comensation.

I was unaware the 300d did not have FEC. In that case, the 420 would not be a good flash for it. I got the 420ex for my 10d and it's working rather nicely so far...

I didn't realise the 300D lacked fec either

It's just one more reason why the 300D doesn't make a whole lot of sense over the 10D. If you're spending that much money on something, might as well get what you want. Personally I'd find it infuriating not to have some of those features when I know that in a lot of cases the only thing holding it back is firmware.

For those interested, Breeze System's Downloader Pro allows you to set the Flash Exposure Compensation on the 300D quickly and easily.
Downloader Pro is a fantastic program, especially if you have a card reader. I use it to download pictures into directories named "Year-Month", and then inside that directory, a "Year-Month-Day" directory that contains all the shots from that day... all automatically. Highly recommended for anyone, not just 300D users! |

The 550EX and 420EX are both outstanding flash units that are fully functional on the 300D.
Although the lack of in-camera flash exposure compensation adjustment is a bummer, you can still adjust it with Downloader Pro if you know the flash shooting situation your are going to be in.
Manual mode on the 550EX is one alternative, but you'll need to know "where to start" in terms of manually setting the flash power (which is selectable as a fraction of "full power": 1/1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64 or 1/128). Each succeeding power level is a change of a full-stop, which is less than the 1/3-stop granularity that flash exposure compensation offers.
