I'm heading down to San Diego this weekend for our national allergy convention. I'll be staying at the US Grant and was curious as to what people thought were great things to shoot within walking distance (let's say 2 miles). I will definitely take a cab to Coronado Island to see the hotel out there.
OK, show me your shots!

They hold a dog surfing competition there which is just amazing - I had these already in the portfolio but I had many more.
It's a great compact city that feels great.
Hope you have fun

Within walking distance from downtown:
Seaport Village
Gaslamp District & Horton Plaza
The Harbor
From across the Harbor & Coronado
Just South of Seaport Village, is the Aircraft Carrier USS Midway, and right beside it, is the 25-Foot tall statue Unconditional Surrender

View coming in.
If you have 3 - 4 hours do a whale watching tour
The Midway is also a cool tour.
Was just there 2 weeks ago on vacation. Awesome place to be.
Have fun.

Thanks guys, and a big thanks to Brad. I'm starting to salivate. Now hopefully I'll have some time to do some shooting.
Is that tall ship always there?
Morning bump to let others chip in.

That "tall ship" is the Star of India and it is always there, at the foot of Broadway, an easy walk from your hotel. It's a maritime museum; you can go on board and tour the whole thing and take tons of shots. It's the oldest surviving iron sailing ship in the world. It was originally built, I think, on the Isle of Man; in the UK for sure anyway.
Every few years they actually take it out sailing; it's always a huge event. My then-wife was on the volunteer crew for a couple of these excursions.

Yep, always there. I stayed in a hotel across the street from it for a few days and have shots with my A40 somewhere on my hard drive. Lovely ship! |

As Robert said, when it does set sail, it's a pretty big event in San Diego.
One of the cool things the ship does is in it's affiliation with the schools. They have programs where a select number of students goes aboard, on an overnight mock cruise. The students become the crew, stand watches, set riggings, and live the life of a sailor in the old days. My son was fortunate to have been able to do that, and is certainly a memory he will carry with him the rest of his life. |

Can you get close enough to it to shoot at sunrise? or do you have to buy a ticket to get on the pier and the ticket window is closed?

Pier is all open public access, as are all the piers.
You can walk right up to just about anything around. |

Brad covered San Diego pretty well, all by himself. The only thing I have to add is that Balboa Park is a five minute cab ride from downtown.

The San Diego Zoo is also located in Balboa Park.

Little Italy is also near downtown.
Oh...and here's the obligatory picture of the Hotel del Coronado.
Though I don't have any good pictures, I would definitely go see the Star of India and the Midway. Both are amazing.

The drive over the Coronado bridge is breathtaking,
and I would suggest one way be done by:
Word of caution:
Best not wander around here - looks
like they would tow you away. LOL
