OK so I was bored and reading the B&H catalog looking at the different diffusers and got a wild hair. I thought up my own design and with 50 cents worth of poster board, semi-opaque plastic from a bottle and the almighty duct tape I made this. Introducing the TheGrandwazzaddle!

Flash Head On

Gary Fong LS Cloud

TheGrandwazzaddle

$50.00usd for the Light Shpere (I have 2 and spent 100) OR 50 cent! :-P

Thanks but for all the tape residue on my $350 dollar flash I'd rather spend the $50. I like your persistance :-)

Definitely lost less light with the Grandwizzledizzle... foshizzle. :-)

Otherwise the results are quite comparable. But saving 49.50 is a good thing :-)

Sort of like the ping-pong ball diffuser :)

If you don't like the tape residue use gaffer's tape.

Looks pretty good! Love the name.
I lost my dome top for my Lightsphere. Any ideas?

Yup... just stroll through the plasticware aisle of your local Wally World and find a lid that fits :-)

There is no tape residue it's all paper and plastic inside. It will slide on and off with ease, it weights nothing and you can move the flash head in all directions the manufacturer intended. I can shoot the inside of the device if you wish! :-D

The big question I have Wazz, is do you cuddle with that doggy when you sleep? :-P

That's pretty cool, when I get my DSLR and a flash to fit I think I'll make something like this.

:) Can't wait to go this Friday night. *sarcasm*
The last time I popped in to Wally World on a Friday night the whole town was there. Big night out, for sure. Cracked me up.

You can buy replacements on the Gary Fong site, you can buy different colors as well as the new Chromedome. Or a butter dish lid works in a pinch. :-)

This is about the third time I've seen someone beat the lightsphere with a homemade bounce card or diffuser.
Maybe I'm in the minority, but as an engineer, I've never liked the design of the lightsphere; it's really *not* a good design. It's a gimmick. There, I've said it. Gimmick.
you can get better results with a good bounce card or reflector, or by bouncing overhead when that's possible.

Design something, get ya a gimmick and show Fong up . A lot of DPCers would probably buy into your idea :-)

If you look at waz's design, it's very similar to a Lumiquest bounce attachment, and in fact it's about the most effective thing you can attach directly to the flash, at least conveniently. Anything that would significantly improve on the softness of the light would be pretty unwieldy.
Bottom line, I recommend the Lumiquest products, or make your own similar setup like Waz did.

I do agree and this is a darn good design ... //www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNCmuExlHvM

But you stink at the gimmick part :-P

His is more or less like yours, but tapered word the bottom, so that it wraps around the flash. It is a pretty good design IMO.

Great idea waz. I love stickin' it to the man. One question though. What was the ceiling situation in your tests? In other words, what did the shot look like with the flash just bouncing up and nothing attached?

I was relegated to the bed room by my girl as she was watching something on the DVR. LOL It has an 8ft popcorn ceiling (2 rooms left and no more popcorn :-D) I figured it would be better than the TheGrandwazzaddle and not a complete test. I will shoot some more at work tomorrow where I have higher ceilings. Maybe some fill light shots.

Hot off the sensor. :-P

ETA: Same everything just bounced straight up nothing attached.

Looks like thegrandqizzledizzle is throwing at least one stop on light forward.

Wazz, are you using the flash in TTL mode?
