I'm thinking about purchasing some lightweight and portable stands and umbrellas to use for traveling with my 580EX's. My question is, what all do I need to connect these? I've got my lightstand, umbrella, and maybe two of these connectors to screw into the flash stand? I'm assuming the umbrella goes into the little hole in the connector...
Is there any kind of hotshoe adapter I can screw into the connector so I can just slide the flash on? Are these even the things I need? |

The Bogen connector you linked to is a way to change the thread size.

| Ok thanks, that does make more sense :). I don't suppose you know the approximate size of that thing? ...I feel like I've seen one before and its a couple inches long and weighs a few ounces but I'm not sure if I'm maybe remembering something else... |

I couldn't find it on B+H, but this is what I have and works great:Photoflex Umbrella Shoe Mount Clamp.
You can see it with an umbrella (sort of) in my setup:
Edit: Gordon's is cheaper and looks about the same.
