what are the advantages/disadvantages of using a lens hood? i've got one with my camera but never used it. last night i was at a party where the photographer was using theirs the entire time.

what would be an appropriate time to use one? when i plan on using my flash?

thanks!

When is an appropriate time to use one ?

any time there is light falling on the lens.

Yes that means all the time.

There are times when you might not bother, but stray light reduces the contrast and quality of your pictures, whether you see it as flare or not.

It's also good for protecting the front element, should it be dropped, knocked, nudged or just generally around a lot of other stuff that could potentially do harm to the lens. I've only got one for my 70-200 but am going to pick up ones for my shorter primes as well.
