I have just started using a multiple canon flash setup. 580EX as master on the camera bracket and 430EX as slave (key) on stand. Currently I am using a hot light to light the bg, but would prefer to use an inexpensive strobe with color filters. I am looking at
This One
It is my understanding that I should be able to add any autoflash (like the one above) to the C group of my canon setup and have it fire as a slave controlled by the 580EX. I understand that that the C-group in the canon system is not evaluated for exposure calculations and that its power will have to be set to manual (I am assuming this flash can be set to manual).

Does anyone have any experience using a third canon flash as bg?
Anyone have an untested but likely theoretical answer?

And if you use a three-flash canon system, can you tell me what flash you have used as the C-group?

How are you planning on triggering this flash? Hot Shoe slave sensor?

Ben - whoops - it has no sensor on it at all
Are there any cheap (like $50) flashes that can be triggered by the 580?

Not that I know of, I've been looking for something to do exactly what you are trying to do. The cheaper hot shoe slaves SAY that they can handle a preflash but I've seen mixed results in forums.

Does anyone know if you can use both the 580 on the hotshoe and a sync cable at the same time? Perhaps that is an option. Since you dont need metering you can get the flash you want and a cheap hot shoe Sync cord trigger.

Well, it looks like the 420EX would be the least expensive solution. But that is too much $$ just for a bg light - I guess I will stick to the hot light and try to rig some colored transparencies or something to act as a color gel...

Wondering if anyone knows the answer to my question:

Can you use both the 580 on the hotshoe and a sync cable at the same time?

Yes, you should be able to do. You can have a 580EX on the hotshoe and a pocket wizard on the sync cable from the camera and it works. So no reason why a long piece of wire in place of the PW shouldn't work (though I've not tried either)
