Can anyone recommend a starting point for creating a website for wedding photography? I'm not sure my portfolio is strong enough yet but I would soon like to set a site up to both advertise & present my work as well as store high-res shots for clients to download. Is there a hosting service that is recommended for this type of use?

The extent of my web development skills ended with Microsoft Frontpage so any tips on how to build the site myself would be appreciated as well.

Thanks!

Smugmug comes to mind. With a pro account, you can modify the existing templates to suit and also offer digital downloads at any price you want.

1) burn your copy of frontpage.

2) look at other wedding photographer's websites or website templates. i'm not advocating you rip them off. (sorry. had to say that.) instead, study them to find out what you think really works and what you think doesn't.

do you like flash-based sites? do you want to watermark your images? how many photos do you need to put online? should you put pricing online? those are the kinds of questions you need to ask yourself while you look at these sites.

3) find a graphic designer or someone with some talent to help you design a logo and a SIMPLE, professional template. nothing screams "fresh meat" like using the fonts that come with windows. (yeah, argue with me. YOU show me one decent professional website that uses comic sans. :P)

4) keep it simple.

some places to start looking for templates and sites:

//www.templatesweb.com/wedding.htm
//www.templatesweb.com/art.htm
//www.webcreme.com/
//www.netdiver.net/

bottom line, you need to find out what you think works and what you think doesn't work before you jump into creating something.

hope this helps! :)
