Hi Folks,
I am interested to know where you get your photos done after you have done a shoot for someone. What is the process involved and what are the approx costs.(i'm in the UK)
For instance, i have been asked by a friend to take a few photos of her, nothing serious, just a few candid types. once they have been done i would like to get the professional printed, so where do i start?
Thanks |

mpix.com is the only place I've had things printed. They do a great job and offer a lot of products. Mpix also has some awesome forums. I think that they are an offshoot of millers. I've heard some people say WHCC is awesome, but I have never printed with them. |

My website is hosted by SmugMug and I do most of my prints with them. proofs (4X6") are .19 cents US each. Quality is good, shipping is reliable.

I second what Cindi said. I use Smugmug to order prints that I need, and most of my clients order straight from there. I've been very happy with their prints. |

I always use photobox, and i've been really happy with them. And for posters, foto.com is unbeatable! £5.50 for 20"x30"!

For me it depends on the size of the print and how quickly I need it. Most of the time it ends up being KodakGallery, and I was especially happy with them when they recently replaced a large print that arrived damaged at no charge. I recently used my grocery store's 1-hour photo for a black and white 5x7, and it turned so well that I wouldn't hesitate to do it again - though I would never tell a client that their beloved print cost me 33 cents and was processed near the tomatoes. I still have to test their color prints, though.

I've used:
walmart (3 of them)
Ritz Camera (2 of them)
winkflash.com
and pro labs
H&H
filmet
TPIPhoto
I know folks that use Costco and have seen the output
All three pro labs blow the rest away in quality. H&H has a slight edge over the other two pro labs, but they're bigger. (Millers/MPix is largest in the US, H&H is second)
Filmet and TPI use kodak, H&H is mostly fuji, but I think they do Kodak as well.
Walmart and Ritz have no consistency from day to day, operator to operator, store to store, etc. Winkflash is better, but their prints are like walmarts and costco, not real rich in color or contrast, kind of flat. You may not notice unless you compare the prints side by side.
The pro labs all offer prints, and most offer all sorts of other items, and some offer huge prints - filmet can do 40x50 if you need it BIG! H&H offers all sorts of papers, coatings, textures and such, and all the labs offer monting on a variety of materials of various thicknesses. |

I use Smugmug as well. One reason I like them best is that you can use the "True" color option (in gallery customization) for prints, and they won't color correct all your careful editing on you. You'd have to sign up for a paid Smugmug account though, if you don't already have one.
Shutterfly also has great prints (and is free to upload photos for printing), but the procedure to mark them so that they won't auto color correct on you is a bit cumbersome.
I'd stay away from Sony ImageStation or whatever they are calling it now, even though they are dirt cheap. Their silver halide process can do tricky things to some prints.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

Right next to my computer; I bought the Canon i9900 printer a few years back and it's amazing. Although the initial price is steep, ink refills are expensive, and paper isnt cheap either, it more than paid for itself when I printed out photos from my wedding for my friends and family. The quality is way better than any photo store I've seen. |
