I know I haven't been commenting a lot on the portfolio-images of you guys, but it seems like I'm not the only one.

It looks like all comments go to the challenge entries, the other "normal" portfolio-images are being ignored?

I don't know if I'm the only one who thinks this is an issue, how do you feel about this? (or am I whining? if that's the case, well that was not the intention ;))

Well, I find it very hard to get around to keeping up on everyone's portfolio. When I see an image I like while bopping around in the forums or even one I don't particularly like but have an idea for a better result, I try to leave a comment. Being such an amateur at this point, most of my comments are wide-eyed praise but I have been known to often suggest coming in closer to the subject to make it more dynamic (cropping) and to get rid of extra cluttered space.

With 6 challenges going all the time and some of them with 270 to 570 entries ... you get the point ... (pant pant pant)

yeah... I get the point.. :(

and I understand! really! but it seems like you need to enter a challenge to receive some comments, and most of the time these comments aren't very constructive.

I like to grow in photography, and used to a while ago with the comments I received on DPC, but right now it feels like I'm freewheeling around.

While most of my comments go to challenge entries, I will follow an image to someone's portfolio because I get curious about what else they might have done. There, if another image moves me, I'll comment. Forum threads (like this) often lead me to a portfolio as well, when I get curious.

Another pastime I enjoy is to monitor recently uploaded images, which will lead me to portfolios browsing. Browsing leads to comments. I browse when I want to relax and "just explore" for what others are doing.

I am reluctant to offer a critique as opposed to a simple praise of a photo in a portfolio, because I don't know whether it would be welcome. I am relatively new to photography, and not very succesful in my results yet, and so am unsure how comments intended as constructive criticism might be received (yes, I have been on the receiving end of unfriendly PMs as a result of '1-3' chalenge comments). It might be helpful if people made clear in their profile what sort of feedback they are looking for:
- any comments at all
- constructive feedback only
- using the portfolio as a showcase for work the photographer is quite happy with and therefore doesn't want feedback on - ie, say you like it if you do, but otherwise keep quiet.

Off to mark my bio as open to constructive criticism, even if it is going to be on the harsh side a la Simon Cowell.

I suggested a long while back to have a critique queue for normal portfolio entries. One can of course use the forums now to solicit comments, but I think a formal mechanism would be great.

The side challenges, such as the current 30-day portrait challenge, are a great way to get comments. They tend to be less critical and more supportive, but not always, and all the comments are worthwhile and helpful. They're a great way to increase both comments received and comments given.

Well, it would be hard to comment on many of the portfolio images. There have to be 10 to 20 thousand accounts here.
If you did a hundred a day.............

Isn't it weird when you suddenly get a slap in the face and you realise you're doing EXACTLY what you don't want other members to do! I'm pretty new to dpc and as I add to my portfolio, I hope to see some sort of comments from other members so that I know where and when to make improvements. On the other hand, when I view members portfolios I rush through to see as many as possible, and don't leave half as many comments as I should. Well, I apologise! I'ts always great to get comments, whether positive or negative so in future, I will make myself a cup of coffee or pour a glass of wine, relax, browse through the portfolios at leisure and endeavour to leave comments on most of the images I view.

I rarely ever look at my own portfolio images and am surprised when I find comments on them when I do. People notice challenge comments because you are always looking there.

Comments typically are not intended to be critiques of photographs which is why most of them aren't particularly meaningful.

If you want critiques of an image then start a forum discussion or seek out a trusted mentor. Generally speaking, random comments will tell you little.

I disagree, most of the comments i recieve are on non-challenge shots, as there are far more of them, and the comments i receive are usually very helpful, especially pointing things out you just might not have noticed.

I love comments, there the main reason i'm here.

I agree...I am going to put that on my bio too. Great idea!!
